Seven Challenges

1. We decided to open up and talk honestly about ourselves and
about alcohol and other drugs.
2. We looked at what we liked about alcohol and other drugs, and
why we were using them.
3. We looked at our use of alcohol or other drugs to see if it has
caused harm or could cause harm.
4. We looked at our responsibility and the responsibility of others
for our problems.
5. We thought about where we seemed to be headed, where we
wanted to go, and what we wanted to accomplish.
6. We made thoughtful decisions about our lives and about our
use of alcohol and other drugs.
7. We followed through on our decisions about our lives and drug
use. If we saw problems, we went back to earlier challenges
and mastered them.

Eligibility
1. Adolescents between 13-17 that have been diagnosed as
substance abusing or substance dependent. The adolescent
may also be dually diagnosed. Requires removal from the home
to a community-based residential setting with treatment in a
staff secure setting.
2. Is experiencing symptoms/behaviors related to his/her
diagnosis that severely impairs functional ability in academic,
social, vocational, community or family domains.
3. Is unable to attain/maintain sobriety in a significant outpatient
effort
4. Is neither violent nor significantly behaviorally or
psychologically disturbed (requiring a more highly structured
program or hospitalization).
5. Has potential for completing 100-150 days of intensive
residential treatment.

Eligibility
6. Has cognitive ability to process program information and
behavioral dynamics.
7. Family participation in family sessions is required while the child
is in treatment.
8. Documentation of TB screening.
9. Has been identified as a Child with a Substance Abuse Disorder
(CSSAD) Target Population.

History
PORT Human Services is a Critical Access Behavioral Health
Agency (CABHA) licensed by the State of North Carolina
Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS). We
are a private, nonprofit that provides service and support
for residents of North Carolina who seek assistance with
Substance Abuse, Mental Health and
Intellectual/Developmental Disability issues. The
organization was founded in 2003 and is governed by a
Board of Directors representing a cross section of citizens
from the area. Our services are delivered by an inter-
disciplinary team of qualified professionals who adhere to
the highest standards of care and values. The full
continuum of needs for each person we serve is supported
by the professionals within the PORT organization; which
means our family will care for your family.

Funding
A clear definition of what is a behavioral diagnosis, or a
substance abuse diagnosis
More experienced and educated drug counselors
A higher emphasis on parent and family involvement for child in
treatment
Ability to keep child in program longer if the need is justified
