Library Media Skills Classes
Research classes will focus on the prescribed USOE Library Media Curriculum: Information Literacy and Media
Literacy. Third, fourth, fifth and sixth grade students will attend block schedule classes lasting five class periods for
twelve days. These twelve sessions will give students time to research, make note cards, and write a rough draft and
bibliography. The rough drafts may be taken home to be edited by parents. A final copy should be typed or
handwritten in ink and turned in the following week. The classroom teacher and the library teacher will assess the
papers and give a final grade.

Library Use
Every classroom (kindergarten through sixth grade) will attend the library once a week for a forty-five minute
teaching time. Younger grade students (K-3rd grade) will focus mainly on the Literature Strand of the Library Media
Core Curriculum. Older students 4th-6th will study all three strands of the core: Information Literacy Strand, Media
Literacy Strand and Literature Strand. Students will check books in and out during this time period. The school
improvement plan also gives students 15 minutes to practice math facts in the library computer lab. This forty-five
minute block gives teachers time to collaborate.

Student Expectancies
Students are asked to protect books in a backpack or plastic bag. If a book is lost or damaged, the student will be
charged the library's replacement cost of that material. Please do not buy used books from Amazon to replace lost or
damaged books. The librarian will replace the book with a library bound book.

Length of Check-Out
Kindergarteners may check-out one book at a time. The first book must be returned before a new book can be
checked out. Lower grade students have 7 days for check-out. First graders may check out one book, second graders
may check-out two books and third graders may check-out three books at one time. Upper grade student have 14
days for check-out and may check out more than three books for use in book reports, accelerated reader and research
skills.

Library Rules
The library is a place to use indoor voices, respect school materials, walk quietly, share computers and be polite.
Students will be expected to keep their hands, feet and other objects to themselves. The general school rules are:
Be Safe, Be Responsible and Show Respect. During teaching times students will be asked to raise their hands to
make comments and ask questions. Students who disrupt the learning environment will be sent to Think Time or
sent to a partner teachers classroom.
