Amending the Constitution
The proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution shall eliminate the Electoral College and vest upon
United States citizens the sole power to elect the President. The proposal shall result in actual majority
rule based on popular vote and shall purge the election of bribes and inaccuracy. It is imperative that we
take all the means necessary to place the power of democracy in the hands of the people without
inhibiting the processes of government. Though our founding fathers set up the Electoral College as a
safety net to prevent the uneducated majority from electing corrupt officials or legislating fatal policies,
the Electoral College is now considered an archaic and irrelevant vestige of government that acts as an
impediment to democracy in an educated society. Therefore, ridding the U.S. government of an
Electoral College is a crucial and reasonable step towards a true democracy that places as much power
in the people as possible.
The bill shall be proposed for addition to the amendment list by petition to the houses of Congress to
encourage a two-thirds majority vote of the proposed amendment. The proposed amendment will try
for ratification by gaining a three-fourths voter majority from residents of the several states. Petition
and ad campaigns shall occur to garner public interest and support for more direct democracy. The
proposal method for the bill was chosen to bring national attention to the bill, appropriate for its
national concern. The process for ratification was chosen for direct voter involvement, analogous with a
direct form of democracy.
Amendments to the U.S. Constitution are far and few between because of the difficulty in attaining
national consensus in proposing and ratifying the amendment. Practically speaking, it is impossible to
propose and ratify controversial issues and it is harder still to reach out to so many of the public.
However, with the widespread availability of internet and social media through computers, mobile
devices, and television, a bill up for proposal has a higher chance of passing if it is legitimate concern of
the public. The launching of online petition sites have allowed the public and the individual to have a
more direct say into politics and therefore have influenced more individuality in the American public.
The public is more likely then to support a bill that increased their direct democracy.
