Sunnyvale Parents,

The safety and health of our students is always a top priority. The recent health concerns
related to the Ebola Virus may, understandably, cause some distress among our community.
Please know that Sunnyvale ISD is in communication with Dallas County health officials and
is working with the Town of Sunnyvale to respond to this issue. There is currently no reason
to believe that the situation presents a health concern to Sunnyvale ISD students, faculty or
staff members.

In an effort to maintain wellness in our schools, we have begun implementation of the
following procedures:
1. Screening of all visitors through use of a wellness questionnaire,
2. Educating our nurses and staff with CDC virus facts, symptoms, and
prevention,
3. Maintaining clean and healthy learning environments, through routine use of
institutional-grade cleaning supplies by trained personnel, with the addition of
enhanced disinfectant precautions, and
4. Communicating any concerns or issues to our community.

To provide you with the latest helpful information, the district has created a new SISD
Health Updates website with resources. A special SISD Health Comment Card is
available for parents and community members to submit questions. Responses will be
posted in our new Student Health Blog. Please view our website to locate both.

Also, Dallas County Health & Human Services has opened a phone line for questions
regarding the Ebola virus, available from 8 AM - 4 PM, Monday-Friday, at 972-692-2783.

A Friendly Reminder
SISD would like to remind our community of our school health policies and protocols,
found in our student handbook (page 31):
Student Illness
When your child is ill, please contact the school to let us know he or she wont be attending that day. It is important
to remember that schools are required to exclude students with certain illnesses from school for periods of time as
identified in state rules. For example, if your child has a fever over 100 degrees, he or she must stay out of school
until fever free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medications. In addition, students with diarrheal illnesses must
stay home until they are diarrhea free without diarrhea-suppressing medications for at least 24 hours. A full list of
conditions for which the school must exclude children can be obtained from the school nurse.

If a student becomes ill during the school day, he or she must receive permission from the teacher before reporting
to the school nurse. If the nurse determines that the child should go home, the nurse will contact the parent.

The district is also required to report certain contagious (communicable) diseases or illnesses to the Texas
Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) or our local/regional health authority. The school nurse can provide
information from TDSHS on these notifiable conditions.

Contact the school nurse if you have questions or if you are concerned about whether or not your child should stay
home.

As always, we appreciate your support.
