Breakout Sessions (Choose 2)

Jennifer Floyd- Twitter is not just for celebrities. its a great tool for educators, too! This presentation will
explore the use of Twitter as a tool for educators. The presenter will demonstrate how Twitter can be used to develop
professional learning networks and provide support for informal professional development. In addition, the presenter
will also address how Twitter can encourage parent communication, guide participants in establishing their own
Twitter accounts, and provide suggestions for people to follow on Twitter, chats to participate in, and how to
navigate Twitter. (P, E, MS, HS)

Becky Davenport- One Book, One School programs can create enthusiasm for literature, promote reading
at home, and build school community. Learn about possible titles, schedules, home/school connections, and
other ways to make this a successful program at your school. (P, E, MS)

Jordan Perdue-Daily Five Do you think its impossible to integrate independent reading, partner reading,
writing and word work during your literacy block, and STILL work uninterrupted with guided reading groups
and individuals? We will discuss how to get started with the Daily 5 management system and how to keep your
guided reading instruction and independent practice running smoothly. We will also share examples of how
Daily 5 works well in lower and upper grade classrooms. (P, E, MS)

Bobbie Arbogast- Engineering with VA Readers Choice Book: exclamation mark We all have an inner
exclamation mark. The question is how to find it. Childrens Engineering includes hands-on, age-appropriate
technology-based activities that enhance, not add to, curriculum. These activities are designed to extend and to
promote mastery of required standards. Come engineer your exclamation mark! (P, E, MS)

Katie Dredger- Increasing Text Complexity in Grades 4-8: Supporting (not Frustrating) Readers
Given national discussions on text complexity and read-to-learn initiatives, now is the time to discuss
supporting students as they move toward academic disciplinary reading. While we support these readers, we
may offer a greater quantity of stretch texts, we may work to build readers tenacity with text, we may
privilege non-fiction / non-narrative texts, and we may explicitly move students from aesthetic to efferent
stances when reading. In doing these things, there are many research-supported reasons why we will continue
to avoid frustration level texts and frustration level reading instruction. Participants will be able to discuss the
current climate of reading instruction, will share anecdotes, and will leave with research-supported reasons to
think critically about Increasing Text-Complexity Initiatives. (E, MS)

Margaret Alger- Interactive Think-Aloud Lessons: Join us on our school-wide initiative to engage
teachers and train students in strategies to improve comprehension. Building on Lori Oczkus' book Interactive
Think-Aloud Lessons: 25 Surefire Ways to Engage Students and Improve Comprehension, our elementary
school staff is learning and using her Super 6 comprehension techniques. Join our school librarian, Title 1 staff
and a 3rd grade teacher as they share their positive experiences in this learning journey. (P, E, MS)
