Introduction:

The unit of work that I have selected is the Loving Others unit constructed for a
Year 1 class. Within this unit, the Human Person topic ponders the myriad of
uses of the human body and is entitled Wondering at our Bodies and the
Salvation Topic is Jesus. The overview of this unit depicts how each of the key
learning points evolves around uses of our bodies, before the Steps of the
Process reveal that there is definite element to examining Christ and the way in
which he used his body.

Summary of Key Themes:
The Teacher Background Material section of this unit contains information that,
when examined, reveal the key themes and ideas present within the content to
be taught. Each of these key themes possesses a direct link to the Human Person
topic of Our Bodies and the Salvation Topic of Jesus. The key themes within this
unit and the links to the topics are presented in a table below:
Key Understanding Topic of relevance Explanation
Religious awareness (A1) Salvation Topic This key theme exists to
assist students in their
development and
understanding of
religious faith. This is
further explored in A2,
where a key question
that arises is what must
God, who created our
bodies, be like?.
Uses of our bodies (A1) Human Person Topic Present within many
activities in this unit is
the notion of examining
the different uses of our
bodies, particularly the
fundamental use of
showing love to those
around us; thus heavily
relating to the Human
Person Topic.

Love (A3) Human Person &
Salvation Topic
The theme of love and
loving those around you
features subtly
throughout this unit of
work. Catechism 1604
states that we are
created out of love and
this features in the unit
as students learn ways of
using their bodies to
demonstrate love to
those around them. The
key understanding of
love is linked to the life of
Jesus through the way in
which he lived. Links to
the Human Person Topic
are evident through the
quote The human body
shares in the dignity of
the image of God -
Catechism 364.

From all of the above key understandings, I believe the main central idea of the
unit is that we are to live as Jesus did. The unit suggests that this can be done
through loving one-another and by using the God-given gift of our body to
demonstrate love in as many ways as we can.

Organisation Details:
In the teaching of this unit, there are multiple external resources that I will aim
to use. In teaching about our own bodies, I will aim to explore our senses by
handling, seeing, smelling, hearing and tasting different goods (for example:
tasting - sweet/sour/salt, touching smooth/rough). In terms of literacy, I think
the Bible passage John 13:1 (Washing of the Disciples Feet) is a perfect example
of how to teach about how Jesus used his body to show love. The YouTube clip
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PT-HBl2TVtI will be useful in showing
examples of how to demonstrate love. The childrens book Guess How Much I
Love You by Sam McBratney can be used in educating students how people use
their bodies to demonstrate love.

Reasons for Choosing the Unit:
My reasoning for choosing this unit is based around the fact that it was the unit
of work being taught during my Prac in a Year 1 classroom. On Prac I had the job
of teaching Religious Education lessons that were to be elicited from this unit,
and I found it to be a unit that is able to interest students through number of
engaging and practical ways. Loving Others is a unit that not only encourages
students to explore the various uses of their bodies, but how to use their bodies
to demonstrate love and compassion towards others (B1) and also about how
various disabilities may affect our bodies (A1); both of which I believe are life
skill that are otherwise different to teach. I believe that the unit is also
appropriate to the age and maturity levels of Year 1 students. Whilst on Prac I
found that the students in my class were very willing to participate in the lessons
due to the fact that they were very willing to try new things with their bodies.
For these reasons I believe that unit is more than a unit of Religious Education, it
is a tool that educates young students about society and the world in which we
life.
