WORKING TOGETHER TO FOSTER INDIVIDUAL GROWTH
Ryan Road is a community of diverse learners. It is our
goal to recognize each of our students strengths and to
provide them with the resources, tools, and strategies they
need to be successful. As each child is unique, they may
require di!erent tools to accomplish
the same job.
My goal, as your childs teacher, is to provide a safe, engaging
and cooperative learning environment that acknowledges
and embraces their unique di!erences. By recognizing each
childs strengths and challenges we are able to work
collaboratively to promote a community of respectful
learners.
Dear Students, Parents, and Guardians:
It is hard to believe how quickly the school year is moving so quickly! During the first month of school
we worked very hard to establish our classroom routines, to practice working cooperatively in small and
large groups, and what it means to be a good friend. We practiced by playing various math games such as
Addition Bingo, Number Fishing, and Money Memory as well as through a variety of literacy activities and
book studies: The Rainbow Fish, David Goes to School, Interrupting Chicken, and Alexander and the
Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day.
This month we are focusing on a Pumpkin Life Cycle Research Project. The purpose of this project was
to provide students with a meaningful, multi-sensory, method of investigating a familiar topic while working
on their reading, writing, and scientific skills. Students are being asked to demonstrate their knowledge of
how a pumpkin grows; what it looks, smells, and feels like; what the importance of the seeds are; one cool fact they learned from our online
resources; and any other information they feel is important. Students have already completed their written component and their story mapping
plan. This week they are working on creating a video presentation, using iPads, that demonstrates what they have learned. Once everyone has
finished their videos, we will be hosting a Pumpkin Festival on November 3, 2014 at 1:00pm, where students will have the opportunity to
share their hard work with their peers, families, and teachers. The students are very excited!
As always, if you ever have any questions, concerns, or feedback about your child or our school please dont hesitate to call me at
413.587.1550 or to e-mail me at jdickson@northampton-k12.us. I always enjoy talking with students, parents, and families.
Sincerely yours,
