B. Abstract:
Throughout these past two years I have been mentally and physically preparing myself within school, and personal
life experiences to undertake my EDGE project. Ive not only learned to grow as an adult, but also as a member in
the community. I now want to give back through service learning with the homeless animals of Salt Lake County. I
am ready to take on my EDGE project within becoming a helper at local animal shelters, as well as outside at
community homes and etc. I not only want to fulfill the roles of being a volunteer, but I also want to help the shelter
bring in donations (food, blankets, toys, etc.), and raise more awareness for adoption, and be able to care for
community members pets. I will simply ask friends, and locals for these donations, and post flyers. These cats and
dogs specifically need our help, love, and care. The shelter also needs help in reducing the numbers of homeless
cats/dogs by reducing breeding animals if theyre unwanted. On occasion I will see animals roaming the streets, and
are potentially in danger of being killed or injured by vehicles; I choose to help those pets and get them to safety. I
want to make a difference with my EDGE project, and help animals in need. Saving one dog will not change the
world, but surely for that one dog, the world will change forever. Karen Davison

C. Project Details
1. Explain how the project connects with your personal motivations and career aspirations.
My career is in the hospitality industry, dealing with people and making them happy. I simply want to
pursue that towards animals for my EDGE project. I am a huge animal lover, and this project has pushed
me towards becoming a volunteer and given me motivation to participate in doing so. I am so excited to be
involved with helping save animals lives, and care for them.
2. Explain how the project ties in with concepts of community engagement.
My project ties in with concepts of community engagement in many ways. The animal shelter is a part of
the community, as well as the animals. Becoming a volunteer is a positive to the community because it is
something I enjoy and do not need to be offered money for. Bringing in donations from locals and friends
will also get the community itself involved.
3. Provide a timeline for completion of each step of the project.

4. Provide a budget, with projected expenses and revenues, for your project.
My EDGE project does not require much budgeting. The main things I will need money for is gas. Driving
to and from the animal shelter will be costing me money. I want to mainly bring in donations from people
such as: toys, blankets, food, and etc. that way it comes free to the shelter and I. This project is not about
the money. I want to help by giving my care, support, and time towards the animal shelter.
Part 1
Gas expense at approximately $100

Part 2
I have saved up money from working ($100)
As many donations as possible, that I will collect from the community.
Homes that the animals can one day reside in.

5. Explain how your personal strengths will help you complete your project.
My personal strengths will help me complete my goal. I am very good at time management, and will be
able to spend it wisely between school, the animal shelter, and work. I also have friends that want to join
me for fun as I go to the shelter and make the animals happy; the more people, the more attention each
animal receives. I am also a very friendly person, which will help the animals understand that I am there to
make them happy.
6. Explain how you will overcome your personal weaknesses and outside threats to complete your project
Some of my weaknesses that may become an obstacle are my emotions. Knowing that these innocent
animals have been kicked to the street, abused, or just left homeless breaks my heart. Although I want to
help them get into families/homes, it will still be hard for me to leave them. This will be something that
will not only help make me a stronger person, but also help the animals by caring and loving them, and
soon welcoming them to new families/homes.
