1 GRADE LEVEL: 3 rd Grade CLASS SIZE: 16 students LESSON LENGTH: 30 minutes UNIT: Cooperative Learning LESSON #: 4 of 4 LESSON FOCUS: Teamwork, Problem Solving PREVIOUSLY LEARNT SKILLS: 3 previous days of cooperative learning FACILITITES: Blacktop/Grass EQUIPMENT: 20 soccer balls Variety of equipment pieces to make obstacle course Ipod/speakers + appropriate music Cones variety Whistle
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs):
Psychomotor: SWBAT demonstrate movements necessary to effectively chase, flee and dodge (faking, planting foot) during the IA.
Cognitive: SWBAT identify critical skills necessary for successful cooperative learning (communication, trust, leadership, following directions) and recalling previous Key Words: together, listening, teamwork, talking to each other.
Affective: SWBAT gain confidence in engaging in physical activity while staying on task. SWBAT have positive experiences like smiling, cheering with teammates, laughing and high-fives with teacher and others. Instant Activity: Topple Tower 7 minutes
Introduction Quick demonstration about what they will be doing in the IA.
Time: 2 minute
Create 2 teams. While the music is playing one team has to knock over as many cones as possible while the other team has to keep the cones upright. After allocated time is up (45 sec, 1 min, etc), count the cones to see which group needs to increase their effort. Rotate teams.
Time: 4 minutes.
Drink if necessary!! Time: 1 minute. Drs. Killick. Tiger P.R.I.D.E: Unit 1: Lesson 4: Co-operative Learning 2 Body of Session: Cooperative Learning: 19 minutes
Activity #1 Problem solving Time bomb Challenge Time 19 minutes Set up
Time Activity/COTS Refinement Organization 2 min. Group Allocation Teams of 4- 5
2 min. Demonstration: Group must get their equipment ball from one hula hoop to the other through the obstacle course without touching the ball with their hands. In this activity you can place soccer balls in a hula hoop and have them move the ball to the other hula hoop while avoiding all the time bombs (variety of cones, jump ropes, poly spots). The students will be moving the soccer balls with the hula hoop only. DEMO one way a student might get the ball from one hoop to the other. Rules Round 1: 1. All team members have to be involved. 2. You cant touch the ball with your hands at any time. 3. If you break the rules you must start again. 4. See how many times you can go through the obstacle course in 3 min Students observe in their teams Drs. Killick. Tiger P.R.I.D.E: Unit 1: Lesson 4: Co-operative Learning 3 3 min Round 1 Reinforcing Affective objective Teams of 4- 5 3 min Round 2: Improve your score Objective Emphasis: Communication, following directions, leadership.
Teams of 4- 5 1 min DEMO: Round 3: Students will now each have a ball and have to move it from one hoop to the other, while balancing a poly spot on their head. They must do this back and forth while moving through the obstacle course. Rules: 1. Students can not use their hands to stop the ball. 2. If the poly spot falls off they must start again. (if too difficult just allow them to start where they poly spot fell) 3. See how many times you can go through the obstacle course in 3 min Students in General Space 3 min Students Practicing Round 3
Groups 4-5 3 min Round 3: Improve your score Objective Emphasis: Communication, following directions, leadership.
Groups 4-5 2 min Equipment Pick Up: as a team collect equipment from a station and place together in a designated equipment area.
Closure: 4 minutes
Class reviews what skills we learned today: Cooperative learning, problem solving, key words from the day Time: 2 minutes. Class reviews physiological effects of exercise. (pedometers) Time: 1 minute. Discuss what students will be doing next class period and how what they learned in your lesson will transfer into the next. Time: 1 minute Class ends with high-fives on exit. Drs. Killick. Tiger P.R.I.D.E: Unit 1: Lesson 4: Co-operative Learning 4
Assessment:
In addition to the systematic observations that will assess motor differences, time spent in physical activity; you should spend this session assessing: a) psychomotor skills- dribbling a ball - how comfortable did the students appear to be manipulating a soccer ball with their feet? - What COTS were present/absent? b) the affective skills of your students and cultural differences you may see emerge. Take notes on the following and include in your reflection journal: - What languages did you hear the students speak? - Who did the students partner with if given a choice? - During down time who did the students socialize with? - Were the students able to work effectively and without conflict with their partners/teams? If not, what factors seemed to be causing conflict? - What evidence of teamwork/communication did you see? (e.g. high fives etc) - Did the students request any activities/sports? If so, what were they? - What role does Maria play? How do the students respond to her? Does their behavior change when she is around? - Did you learn anything about the students home life/background? If so, what?
