PREFACE
Although the orifice is one of the oldest known devices used
for measuring rates of flow of fluids from vessels into the open
air, its application in closed-pipe flows is a comparatively recent
development. The investigation of flange tap orifice coefficients
began in 1904 when Thomas R. Weymouth, of Oil City, Pennsyl-
vania, started to test thin, sharp-edged, concentric orifice plates
in a flange union, in series with a standard Pitot tube of the
Towl type. This work was interrupted, but was resumed in the
Fall of 1911, resulting, eventually, in the coefficient data first
presented in "The Orifice Meter and Gas Measurement," by
c> Brown and Hall. This book was published by The Foxboro
<J? Company in 1921.
% Subsequent work has been carried on by the American Gas
J Association, the Bureau of Standards, the Bureau of Mines,
^ and the A.S.M.E. In the present volume, data from these and
many other sources have been correlated in usable form. Except
in a very few cases, involving standards which have been widely
accepted by industry, every table, curve or formula has been
checked and cross-checked for accuracy and tested for con-
venience and usability before being included in the text. Be-
cause of this editorial policy, publication of some existing data
has been postponed. Foxboro Company engineers will be glad
to supply such information on request.
The contents and arrangement of this edition are largely the
result of comments and constructive criticism on previous
editions. Wherever possible, the sources of specific data have
been identified. The author and The Foxboro Company wish
to express appreciation for this assistance, and also for the
many unacknowledged contributions which have added so
much to the value of the book.
