In this exercise you will use the Sweep command to create
a life saver. The Sweep command is used to create three dimensional shapes using two perpendicular planes each with their own intersecting sketches one is called the Path and the other the Profile. You will also use the Geometry Text option two create text that curves around a circle. The mathematical term for this shape is a torus which comes from the Latin word for bull The torus looks like the kind of ring typically used a bulls nose ring. Shown here in red is the location of the Sweep command on the 3D Model tab located between Revolve and Emboss.
Shown here is the Geometry Text tool shown in red which is a pull down option on the Text tool, below the Polygon Tool. 1. Create a new standard part in inches 2. Create a new 2D sketch in the X-Y plane 3. Draw a circle with a diameter of 2.000 inches centered at the Origin (yellow dot) on the X-Y plane, Open the Origin folder in the Model Browser and make the XY Plane visible by right clicking on it and selecting visible.
4. In the Origin folder in the Model Browser window make the XZ plane visible by right clicking on it and selecting visible. Create a new 2D Sketch on that plane and draw a circle with a diameter of 0.500 inches that is 1.000 inch away from the origin. It should be intersecting the larger circle on the XY plane. (It is not shown in this picture.) Click on Finish Sketch. 5. In the Ribbon Select the Sweep command. The Profile is the smaller circle and the Path is the larger circle, click on them with the arrow tool in the Sweep dialog box and click OK
6. The completed sweep will look like the doughnut shown here.
7. To create the Geometric Text (circular lettering) you will have to first create an offset plane to draw the lettering and then emboss the text on to the shape. On the 3D Model tab select the Plane Icon and type in -0.250 inches. (The negative sign changes the direction of the offset plane from the top to te bottom of the life saver. 8. On the workplane you just made create a new 2D Sketch. Draw a circle with a diameter of 2.250 inches centered at the origin. Pull down the down arrow on the Text tool and select Geometric Text. Select the circle you just created for the text to loop around. In the dialogue box set the Direction to forward and set the Position to on the inside of the circle. Type in your First and last name period and Life Saver. Click OK to close the dialog box and then click on Finish Sketch.
9. On the 3D Model tab select Emboss and set the depth to 0.05 inches and click OK.
10. Remember to remove the workplanes by right clicking inside the Model browser window and unchecking the visibility for each plane, before taking a 3D view jpg (pictures) of your file for your portfolio.
11. Remember to save your file according to the class convention. So that your name is Jennifer Lopez and you are in 3 rd period you would save the file as: 3 Lopez Jennifer Life Saver.ipt
