A Systematic Approach to Effective

Written Communication
Learning Objectives:
To know 10 characteristics of effective writing.
To recognize writing that does not have 10
characteristics.
To understand how the 10 characteristics work
in combination to make writing effective.
To learn techniques to build the 10 characteristics
into your writing.

In order to provide a mechanism by which students
may air their problems concerning academic
courses, the university has established the following
grievance procedure for all undergraduate students.
First, the student should attempt to resolve his
grievance with the course instructor. If not satisfied
then he may petition head of the department in
question, who will respond to the petition in writing.
If the student is not entirely satisfied, then his
grievance may be submitted to Undergraduate
Petitions Committee, a three man panel composed
of two faculty members and one student who will
render a final decision concerning the grievance.
This presentation includes 10 characteristics that
make written communication effective.

Each one will be discussed and the grievance
procedure re-written to incorporate it.

The goal is to help you see how written
communication, if approached systematically, can be
improved.
