I have had many sad and happy moments. The happiest moment
in my life was probably when I received my first pay. I can never
forget the joyful feeling that was oozing from within my heart. It
was like the time you learnt how to ride a bicycle or the time when
you pay the driving test. I have wanted to relax and while away
the holiday after sitting for the SPM examination. However, at the
invitation of my best friend, we went for a walk-in-interview and
we started work the following week . I worked as a waitress in a
fast-food outlet.
I was so preoccupied with work that it never struck me that the
end of the month was near and that we would be paid our salary. I
was therefore pleasantly surprised when called to the supervisors
room to receive my pay. I was not even sure how much I would be
paid. As I walking into the room, my heart seemed to be pounding.
When told that my pay plus overtime and tips came to RM490, I
thought I felt my heart miss a beat. Grinning from ear to ear, I
nervously signed the voucher and collected the envelope
containing the money in front of the supervisor. I just whispered
thanks and walking back to my post.
For the rest of the day, I could not concentrate on my work. I
was on cloud nine, thinking of the money the whole time. Four
hundred and ninety ringgit! I just could not wait to go home and
see the money for myself. It certainly was a lot of money to me.
The most that I had ever received was from my parents during my
seventeenth birthday. It was a fifty-ringgit note. Now I have nearly
ten times more. Come to think of it, it was actually not difficult to
earn a living.
When I reached home, I let out a yell of joy and told everyone of
my pay. I took out the notes and counted them in front of my
family proudly. I scrutinized the 100-ringgit note from front to back
and back to front. My family members were quite amused with my
antics. Father congratulated me and told me to use the money
wisely. In the midst of my joy, I forgot to thank my parents for their
moral support. I later promised them a treat the next day.
