Largest iron ore mining machine in the world
The biggest MOVING machine build by humans would be the giant bucket wheel excavator "Bagger 288" built
by Krupp in Germany in 1978.
This enormous mining machine (300 meters long, weight: 45,500 tons) is capable of moving on its treads to the
various open-air mine locations.

A Longwall Shearer Mining Machine.
This particular Longwall mine is located in Colorado, and has a 8 foot diameter drum. The mine is located 650 feet
below the surface. The coal seam height was 15 feet. This unit set a Longwall production record (which has since
been surpassed). Longwall mining is state of the art for underground coal mining, achieving very high production
rates of 2,000 - 20,000 tons per shift, depending upon coal seam height and local conditions. On a Longwall unit, a
large block of coal (typically 600 feet by 2,000) is continuously mined, with the large hydraulic steel shields (shown
in the background) holding up the roof (upper layers of rock) while the Longwall Shearer mines the coal.
