Animal Testing

By Emmy, Amritha, Ananya, Natalie, Daria

Background
Started in 300 B.C.
Greek physicians and scientist
1100- Medical procedures
1900- Animals used to test drugs
Purpose of Testing Animals
Scientific - to further research on diseases
with unknown cures
Used as testers for new treatments or medication that
could possibly be used for humans
The law requires any new treatments or
medicines to be tested on animals before
being introduced to humans
Medical Use for Animals
Drugs can be tested on animals first to
ensure the safety of product for human use
Medical treatments studied on animals
Vaccines, Antibiotics, Cancer drugs, Insulin
Study growth of bacteria and disease
New Alternatives for Science
Scientists can now use testing on:
Yeast
Flies
Worms
Caenorhabditis elegans
More effective because:
Less expensive
Can do mass testing
Life span is much shorter than
any other animal, quicker results
Animal Testing is Expensive
Humane Society International, on comparing animal
tests with in vitro counterparts:
DNA synthesis testing:
ANIMAL TEST - $32,000
IN VITRO TEST - $11,000
Uterotrophic Assay Test:
RAT TEST - $29,600
IN VITRO TEST - $7,200
Reasons Animals are Used
Animals have similar composition to humans
Lifespan of animal is short
Can observe changes in short time period
Results arrive sooner
Diverse range of animals to test
Different structures depending on animal
Tests tailored specifically towards certain animal
Animal Testing in Several Industries
Scientific Research
Cosmetics
Soap and Shampoo
Synthetic materials
Development of vaccines
Diapers
Chemicals
Ethical Issues With Animal Testing
Animal testing is cruel and inhumane.
Force Feeding
Forced inhalation
Dehydration and Starvation
Prolonged Periods of Physical Restraint
Inflection of Burns and Wounds
Infliction of Pain to Study Effects and Remedies
Cruel Deaths
Personal Example
2 year old Katniss
Tested on by a shampoo
company while she was
a kitten
Adopted from Marin
Humane Society
