In the introduction to his classic book, Blues People,
Amiri Baraka (who published it as LeRoi Jones) wrote:
The path the slave took to citizenship is what I want to look at.
That same path, along with its continuation, provided much inspiration
for this album called BLUES PEOPLE.
This record is also a tribute to the tribe of blues troubadours that
Im grateful to be a member of and it features the talents of several friends
and heroes of mine. We, who traverse the highways and skyways of the planet
playing the music known as blues, have become a rainbow tribe.
We hail from many lands and cultures, bonded by our love of this music
and the challenge of making it our own.
What began in the fields of the southern United States, became
a universal treasure, cherished by music lovers the world over.
My intention with these songs is to focus on some of the history of
African Americans, the original blues people, as a reminder of what
weve been through and where the music is coming from.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is one of my greatest heroes.
The Civil Rights movement that he is synonymous with is referred
to in several songs on this album. I hope these songs will remind us that
Dr. Kings dream is still a work in progress we are still not home.
May the New Year bring us closer to living that dream.

The seed of this album was planted in
the late summer of 2013. On September 11,
to be precise, an ominous date whose
symbolism hardly escaped Eric and myself
when we met that day in Paris, where he
was promoting his latest recording. I re-
member telling him that Jericho Road ma-
naged to salute the greatness of the Civil
Rights era while remaining relevant in the
21
st
Century. Quite a feat in the current
times of depression, when nostalgia is lur-
king around almost every corner of our
memories.
On that occasion, Eric couldnt stress
enough the similarities between today and
yesterday. In the post-war era, America
was fraught with violence and racism, he
said. For Martin Luther King, Jr. to adapt
the philosophy of non-violence to the Civil
Rights Movement-a movement that called
out across racial boundaries to all of huma-
nity-was a radical move. In this new millen-
nium, plagued by sectarian and tribal
conflicts, Kings radical approach is sorely
missed
In the course of this discussion, Eric
and I came up with the idea of revitalizing
the concept of the socially conscious
shows of the sixties, when the likes of
Odetta, the Staple Singers, Pete Seeger,
Peter, Paul & Mary and Bob Dylan joined
forces to address the problems of their
time. Thus was born We Have a Dream, a
tour that combined the individual out-
looks of Eric, Harrison Kennedy and Ru-
thie Foster (both present on Blues People),
giving a present-day impetus to the collec-
tive dream of a more tolerant world.
The recording of Blues People is the
result of a similar reality check. Another
way for Eric to contribute to the circulation
of a message of peace, hope, and non-vio-
lence. Not that his concern with the issues
of our society is anything new. The son of
actor, singer and social activist Leon Bibb
carries awareness in his DNA: I think that
part of me, the socially aware troubadour,
has always been there. Its certainly part of
my upbringing. Yet Blues People takes that
stance to a higher level, as he realizes that
he is now in a position to play a significant
role in the general picture of our times.
Looking back in time, one can only note
the change that came about in his music
in the space of a decade. With this new
album, his goal is to add to his music a
commentary that will stimulate the dialog
with his fan base. Just making a record of
nice songs may feel good on some level, but

in the context that were in, it seems frivo-
lous to me, he argues. For me, this is the
se-cond chapter of coming to terms with our
history, and deciding to make a change be-
fore there is no turning back.
In that respect, choosing Blues People
as a name for this project was not inno-
cent. When it was published in 1963, Amiri
Barakas eponymous book instantly be-
came a classic, showing the way the begin-
ning of blues coincided with what LeRoi
Jones (Barakas name then) called the be-
ginning of American Negroes. Much as
Baraka/Jones chronicled, through the
prism of Black Americas vernacular art
form, the progressive metamorphosis of
African slaves into American citizens, Eric
shows here that the process is far from
complete, that much remains to be said
and done. In other words, the African-
American caterpillar has yet to blossom
into a butterfly.
The song that probably sums up best
this paradoxical mix of stagnation and mu-
tation is Rosewood. Until recently, the ra-
cially motivated massacre that took place
in this Floridian whistle-stop town in 1923
had been obliterated from the collective
memory of Americans. It took an article
published in 1982, and the John Singleton
film of fifteen years later, to overcome this
bout of amnesia, but Erics song takes the
story one full step further. Replacing this
dramatic event in the context of the disen-
franchised South of the twenties, he
bridges the gap between the horror of the
slave trade and the inadequacy of
Obamas America, in which the hydra of
intolerance and racism still shows its ugly
heads in Miami Gardens and Ferguson.
Blues People is no ordinary album. It
is a piece of art in which Eric fuses various
aspects of the African-American journey,
paying special attention to the legacy of
the Civil Rights Movement, with his own
personal voyage. Where his focus before
would have been a romantic attachment to
the colorful past of his music, he clearly
shifts to a more critical message, while
stressing the relevancy of the subliminal
message wielded by the original blues
songsters. In his own words, this is not just
a loving nod to my heroes, it is a statement.
The measure of any true creator lies
in his capacity to never repeat or para-
phrase himself. With this truly innovative
work, Eric Bibb proves that he hasnt fini-
shed growing as an artist.

in the context that were in, it seems frivo-
lous to me, he argues. For me, this is the
se-cond chapter of coming to terms with our
history, and deciding to make a change be-
fore there is no turning back.
In that respect, choosing Blues People
as a name for this project was not inno-
cent. When it was published in 1963, Amiri
Barakas eponymous book instantly be-
came a classic, showing the way the begin-
ning of blues coincided with what LeRoi
Jones (Barakas name then) called the be-
ginning of American Negroes. Much as
Baraka/Jones chronicled, through the
prism of Black Americas vernacular art
form, the progressive metamorphosis of
African slaves into American citizens, Eric
shows here that the process is far from
complete, that much remains to be said
and done. In other words, the African-
American caterpillar has yet to blossom
into a butterfly.
The song that probably sums up best
this paradoxical mix of stagnation and mu-
tation is Rosewood. Until recently, the ra-
cially motivated massacre that took place
in this Floridian whistle-stop town in 1923
had been obliterated from the collective
memory of Americans. It took an article
published in 1982, and the John Singleton
film of fifteen years later, to overcome this
bout of amnesia, but Erics song takes the
story one full step further. Replacing this
dramatic event in the context of the disen-
franchised South of the twenties, he
bridges the gap between the horror of the
slave trade and the inadequacy of
Obamas America, in which the hydra of
intolerance and racism still shows its ugly
heads in Miami Gardens and Ferguson.
Blues People is no ordinary album. It
is a piece of art in which Eric fuses various
aspects of the African-American journey,
paying special attention to the legacy of
the Civil Rights Movement, with his own
personal voyage. Where his focus before
would have been a romantic attachment to
the colorful past of his music, he clearly
shifts to a more critical message, while
stressing the relevancy of the subliminal
message wielded by the original blues
songsters. In his own words, this is not just
a loving nod to my heroes, it is a statement.
The measure of any true creator lies
in his capacity to never repeat or para-
phrase himself. With this truly innovative
work, Eric Bibb proves that he hasnt fini-
shed growing as an artist.

The seed of this album was planted in
the late summer of 2013. On September 11,
to be precise, an ominous date whose
symbolism hardly escaped Eric and myself
when we met that day in Paris, where he
was promoting his latest recording. I re-
member telling him that Jericho Road ma-
naged to salute the greatness of the Civil
Rights era while remaining relevant in the
21
st
Century. Quite a feat in the current
times of depression, when nostalgia is lur-
king around almost every corner of our
memories.
On that occasion, Eric couldnt stress
enough the similarities between today and
yesterday. In the post-war era, America
was fraught with violence and racism, he
said. For Martin Luther King, Jr. to adapt
the philosophy of non-violence to the Civil
Rights Movement-a movement that called
out across racial boundaries to all of huma-
nity-was a radical move. In this new millen-
nium, plagued by sectarian and tribal
conflicts, Kings radical approach is sorely
missed
In the course of this discussion, Eric
and I came up with the idea of revitalizing
the concept of the socially conscious
shows of the sixties, when the likes of
Odetta, the Staple Singers, Pete Seeger,
Peter, Paul & Mary and Bob Dylan joined
forces to address the problems of their
time. Thus was born We Have a Dream, a
tour that combined the individual out-
looks of Eric, Harrison Kennedy and Ru-
thie Foster (both present on Blues People),
giving a present-day impetus to the collec-
tive dream of a more tolerant world.
The recording of Blues People is the
result of a similar reality check. Another
way for Eric to contribute to the circulation
of a message of peace, hope, and non-vio-
lence. Not that his concern with the issues
of our society is anything new. The son of
actor, singer and social activist Leon Bibb
carries awareness in his DNA: I think that
part of me, the socially aware troubadour,
has always been there. Its certainly part of
my upbringing. Yet Blues People takes that
stance to a higher level, as he realizes that
he is now in a position to play a significant
role in the general picture of our times.
Looking back in time, one can only note
the change that came about in his music
in the space of a decade. With this new
album, his goal is to add to his music a
commentary that will stimulate the dialog
with his fan base. Just making a record of
nice songs may feel good on some level, but

In the introduction to his classic book, Blues People,
Amiri Baraka (who published it as LeRoi Jones) wrote:
The path the slave took to citizenship is what I want to look at.
That same path, along with its continuation, provided much inspiration
for this album called BLUES PEOPLE.
This record is also a tribute to the tribe of blues troubadours that
Im grateful to be a member of and it features the talents of several friends
and heroes of mine. We, who traverse the highways and skyways of the planet
playing the music known as blues, have become a rainbow tribe.
We hail from many lands and cultures, bonded by our love of this music
and the challenge of making it our own.
What began in the fields of the southern United States, became
a universal treasure, cherished by music lovers the world over.
My intention with these songs is to focus on some of the history of
African Americans, the original blues people, as a reminder of what
weve been through and where the music is coming from.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is one of my greatest heroes.
The Civil Rights movement that he is synonymous with is referred
to in several songs on this album. I hope these songs will remind us that
Dr. Kings dream is still a work in progress we are still not home.
May the New Year bring us closer to living that dream.
