In the introduction to his classic book, Blues People,
Amiri Baraka (who published it as LeRoi Jones) wrote:
The path the slave took to citizenship is what I want to look at.
That same path, along with its continuation, provided much inspiration
for this album called BLUES PEOPLE.
This record is also a tribute to the tribe of blues troubadours that
Im grateful to be a member of and it features the talents of several friends
and heroes of mine. We, who traverse the highways and skyways of the planet
playing the music known as blues, have become a rainbow tribe.
We hail from many lands and cultures, bonded by our love of this music
and the challenge of making it our own.
What began in the fields of the southern United States, became
a universal treasure, cherished by music lovers the world over.
My intention with these songs is to focus on some of the history of
African Americans, the original blues people, as a reminder of what
weve been through and where the music is coming from.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is one of my greatest heroes.
The Civil Rights movement that he is synonymous with is referred
to in several songs on this album. I hope these songs will remind us that
Dr. Kings dream is still a work in progress we are still not home.
May the New Year bring us closer to living that dream.
Peace & Love,
Eric

The seed of this album was planted in
the late summer of 2013. On September 11,
to be precise, an ominous date whose
symbolism hardly escaped Eric and myself
when we met that day in Paris, where he
was promoting his latest recording. I re-
member telling him that Jericho Road ma-
naged to salute the greatness of the Civil
Rights era while remaining relevant in the
21
st
Century. Quite a feat in the current
times of depression, when nostalgia is lur-
king around almost every corner of our
memories.
On that occasion, Eric couldnt stress
enough the similarities between today and
yesterday. In the post-war era, America
was fraught with violence and racism, he
said. For Martin Luther King, Jr. to adapt
the philosophy of non-violence to the Civil
Rights Movement-a movement that called
out across racial boundaries to all of huma-
nity-was a radical move. In this new millen-
nium, plagued by sectarian and tribal
conflicts, Kings radical approach is sorely
missed
In the course of this discussion, Eric
and I came up with the idea of revitalizing
the concept of the socially conscious
shows of the sixties, when the likes of
Odetta, the Staple Singers, Pete Seeger,
Peter, Paul & Mary and Bob Dylan joined
forces to address the problems of their
time. Thus was born We Have a Dream, a
tour that combined the individual out-
looks of Eric, Harrison Kennedy and Ru-
thie Foster (both present on Blues People),
giving a present-day impetus to the collec-
tive dream of a more tolerant world.
The recording of Blues People is the
result of a similar reality check. Another
way for Eric to contribute to the circulation
of a message of peace, hope, and non-vio-
lence. Not that his concern with the issues
of our society is anything new. The son of
actor, singer and social activist Leon Bibb
carries awareness in his DNA: I think that
part of me, the socially aware troubadour,
has always been there. Its certainly part of
my upbringing. Yet Blues People takes that
stance to a higher level, as he realizes that
he is now in a position to play a significant
role in the general picture of our times.
Looking back in time, one can only note
the change that came about in his music
in the space of a decade. With this new
album, his goal is to add to his music a
commentary that will stimulate the dialog
with his fan base. Just making a record of
nice songs may feel good on some level, but
SP1379_BOOKLETprint_Mise en page 1 29/09/14 14:36 Page7
PAGE5
in the context that were in, it seems frivo-
lous to me, he argues. For me, this is the
se-cond chapter of coming to terms with our
history, and deciding to make a change be-
fore there is no turning back.
In that respect, choosing Blues People
as a name for this project was not inno-
cent. When it was published in 1963, Amiri
Barakas eponymous book instantly be-
came a classic, showing the way the begin-
ning of blues coincided with what LeRoi
Jones (Barakas name then) called the be-
ginning of American Negroes. Much as
Baraka/Jones chronicled, through the
prism of Black Americas vernacular art
form, the progressive metamorphosis of
African slaves into American citizens, Eric
shows here that the process is far from
complete, that much remains to be said
and done. In other words, the African-
American caterpillar has yet to blossom
into a butterfly.
The song that probably sums up best
this paradoxical mix of stagnation and mu-
tation is Rosewood. Until recently, the ra-
cially motivated massacre that took place
in this Floridian whistle-stop town in 1923
had been obliterated from the collective
memory of Americans. It took an article
published in 1982, and the John Singleton
film of fifteen years later, to overcome this
bout of amnesia, but Erics song takes the
story one full step further. Replacing this
dramatic event in the context of the disen-
franchised South of the twenties, he
bridges the gap between the horror of the
slave trade and the inadequacy of
Obamas America, in which the hydra of
intolerance and racism still shows its ugly
heads in Miami Gardens and Ferguson.
Blues People is no ordinary album. It
is a piece of art in which Eric fuses various
aspects of the African-American journey,
paying special attention to the legacy of
the Civil Rights Movement, with his own
personal voyage. Where his focus before
would have been a romantic attachment to
the colorful past of his music, he clearly
shifts to a more critical message, while
stressing the relevancy of the subliminal
message wielded by the original blues
songsters. In his own words, this is not just
a loving nod to my heroes, it is a statement.
The measure of any true creator lies
in his capacity to never repeat or para-
phrase himself. With this truly innovative
work, Eric Bibb proves that he hasnt fini-
shed growing as an artist.

Where do we go when our time on earth is through?
Some talk about it, some never do
One day were here, next day were gone
We disappear, life carries on
Where do we go I want to know
Where do we go?
The hand that once painted pictures
Lies still with no brush to hold
The heart that beats no longer
Is now turning cold
Kind words wont stem the sorrow
Only time will lessen the loss
One day well make that journey
River Jordan were born to cross
Where do we go
The voice that once lifted spirits
Is silent, to be heard no more
The singer, gone to glory
Is knocking on Heavens door
Our tears fall like raindrops
On the grave were gathered round
One day well sing together
Hand in hand on higher ground
Where do we go
WHERE DO WE GO

I left my home as a young man
Still a boy, truth be told
Took my guitar, my troubled heart
An hit the road
I made my way cross an ocean
In search of somewhere to belong
Just a young buck an travelin on
I made my home in the North Country Far
At a time when very few people there
Looked like me
I made good friends who were kind to a stranger
An his family
Chorus:
Some say I was born with a silver spoon
In my mouth
People, you know Ive paid some dues
Born to play the guitar all around the world
Born to sing these blues
I settled down, got a straight job
Played my music on the side
Put food on the table, paid the rent
But I was not satisfied
Pawned my guitar so many times
So many times its a shame
But I kept on playin - singin my songs
Til the people knew my name

No matter what your tribe or where you come from
Where children laugh an play, elders sing
Praising the gifts of plenty harvest brings

Remember the ones who kept on walkin
When others tried to turn them around
Remember the ones who kept getting up
Every time they was knocked down
Who believed in a new day
Knowin they might not live to see it dawn
Remember the ones who never gave up
An thank them for keepin on
With hearts an minds stayed on freedom
Marchin hand in hand
Leavin behind segregation
Singin This Land Is Your Land
Openin hearts to a new way
Climbin Jacobs Ladder rung by rung
Remember the distance they travelled
An the victories they won
Tell your children where theyve come from
Lift their spirits up high
Give them love, give them courage
For the dream must never die
Tell the children who theyve come from
Let them know weve come far
Give them strength for the journey
Let them know who they are
Remember the ones who knew they were winners
Leanin on love, conquerin fear
Remember the ones who learned to forgive
Day after day, year after year
Who believed in a new day
Oh, Lord, many thousands gone
Remember the ones who never gave up

Well, I hobod from Memphis up to Portland, Maine
I been down to Mexico - everywheres the same
Hard times - everywhere I go
DuPonts sleepin in his mansion, but Im
Driftin door to door
Baby, I wish I could build you a house on a hill
Pour you champagne an wine til you had your fill
But these hard times I know you know
I would build you a home, but Im
Driftin door to door
When I make a little money, Im gon wire you some
When I get to California, Im gon send for you to come
In these hard times on the killin floor
Im tryin to get to Frisco, but Im
Driftin door to door
Baby, I dreamed I was singin - playin in a foreign land
Makin plenty good money treated like a man

The best intentions rent a room
In the boarding house of your heart
Then they lay around all day
Just wastin time, drinkin cheap wine
You knock on the door, but no one answers
Theyre all asleep in the dark
Your lifes on hold another day
But you keep on lyin - everythings fine
Brother, you feel the mans dealin the cards
From a trick deck - an youre ready to brawl
Only way to win is reach deep within
An find the mojo God gave us all
The best intentions go astray
On the back roads of our minds
They stumble around in a fog
Makin plans - goin nowhere
We call their names, but they dont hear us
Lost in a dream that never comes true
We put life on hold another day
After a while we just dont care
Its easy to feel the mans dealin the cards
From a trick deck - an youre ready to brawl
Only way to win is reach deep within

I went out walkin- walkin round today
I met so many good people on my way
Walked into a blind woman
She was lookin round to see
Whos in need of salvation - she started to talk to me
She said, Jesus dont want your money, honey
He wants you to know Gods love
Find it everywhere, my friend
Down here an up above
Right here an up above
On the southern side of Selma
In the summer of 64
Freedom March was on its way
To the courthouse door
So many good people came
To march an sing an pray
The peoples voice was ringin
We shall overcome someday!
We shall - overcome some day

They say the whole thing started with Fanny Taylors lie
That spark lit the flame, fear an hatred fed the fire
Truly, it started centuries ago
Ships with human cargo chained down below
I was in the third grade, I could read an write
I remember every thing, the moon was full an bright
So bright, you could see shadows at midnight
The night they burned Rosewood to the ground
Chorus:
Rosewood, Rosewood
Buried in the ashes of history
Rosewood, Rosewood
Where my family home used to be
Had to put on heavy clothes, fast as we could
There was shootin everywhere
Had to get out in the woods
First person killed was my uncle
Sam Carter was his name
What happened in Rosewood that night
Nothin but a crime an a shame
Newspapers told how many
Whites an blacks were counted dead
But the tears had no color
The tears their families shed
Anyway, the numbers in the papers
Were nowhere near the truth
Coulda been ten, coulda been a hundred
We had no proof
Chorus:
Rosewood, Rosewood
The first day of the New Year, 1923
Burned like a brand on a childs memory
Hidin in the swamps, prayin wed get away
Never talked about it til today
Chorus:
Rosewood, Rosewood
Based on the true story of Rosewood, an African American community obliterated by the fire of racial hatred,
I hope this song will inspire listeners to look deeper into the history of this tragedy and the ongoing tragedy
of racism in all its destructive forms.

The best intentions rent a room

Then they lay around all day
Just wastin time, drinkin cheap wine
You knock on the door, but no one answers
Theyre all asleep in the dark
Your lifes on hold another day
But you keep on lyin - everythings fine
Brother, you feel the mans dealin the cards
From a trick deck - an youre ready to brawl
Only way to win is reach deep within
An find the mojo God gave us all
The best intentions go astray
On the back roads of our minds
They stumble around in a fog
Makin plans - goin nowhere
We call their names, but they dont hear us
Lost in a dream that never comes true
We put life on hold another day
After a while we just dont care
Its easy to feel the mans dealin the cards

I went out walkin- walkin round today
I met so many good people on my way
Walked into a blind woman
She was lookin round to see
Whos in need of salvation - she started to talk to me
She said, Jesus dont want your money, honey
He wants you to know Gods love
Find it everywhere, my friend
Down here an up above
Right here an up above
On the southern side of Selma
In the summer of 64
Freedom March was on its way
To the courthouse door
So many good people came
To march an sing an pray
The peoples voice was ringin
We shall overcome someday!
We shall - overcome some day
Blues People, stick together

Birds of a feather sing

Remember the ones who kept getting up

Knowin they might not live to see it dawn

Tell your children where theyve come from
Lift their spirits up high
Give them love, give them courage
For the dream must never die
Tell the children who theyve come from
Let them know weve come far
Give them strength for the journey

Where do we go when our time on earth is through?
Some talk about it, some never do
One day were here, next day were gone
We disappear, life carries on
Where do we go I want to know
Where do we go?
The hand that once painted pictures
Lies still with no brush to hold
The heart that beats no longer
Is now turning cold
Kind words wont stem the sorrow
Only time will lessen the loss
One day well make that journey
River Jordan were born to cross
Where do we go
The voice that once lifted spirits
Is silent, to be heard no more
The singer, gone to glory
Is knocking on Heavens door
Our tears fall like raindrops
On the grave were gathered round
One day well sing together
Hand in hand on higher ground
Where do we go
WHERE DO WE GO

in the context that were in, it seems frivo-
lous to me, he argues. For me, this is the
se-cond chapter of coming to terms with our
history, and deciding to make a change be-
fore there is no turning back.
In that respect, choosing Blues People
as a name for this project was not inno-
cent. When it was published in 1963, Amiri
Barakas eponymous book instantly be-
came a classic, showing the way the begin-
ning of blues coincided with what LeRoi
Jones (Barakas name then) called the be-
ginning of American Negroes. Much as
Baraka/Jones chronicled, through the
prism of Black Americas vernacular art
form, the progressive metamorphosis of
African slaves into American citizens, Eric
shows here that the process is far from
complete, that much remains to be said
and done. In other words, the African-
American caterpillar has yet to blossom
into a butterfly.
The song that probably sums up best
this paradoxical mix of stagnation and mu-
tation is Rosewood. Until recently, the ra-
cially motivated massacre that took place
in this Floridian whistle-stop town in 1923
had been obliterated from the collective
memory of Americans. It took an article
published in 1982, and the John Singleton
film of fifteen years later, to overcome this
bout of amnesia, but Erics song takes the
story one full step further. Replacing this
dramatic event in the context of the disen-
franchised South of the twenties, he
bridges the gap between the horror of the
slave trade and the inadequacy of
Obamas America, in which the hydra of
intolerance and racism still shows its ugly
heads in Miami Gardens and Ferguson.
Blues People is no ordinary album. It
is a piece of art in which Eric fuses various
aspects of the African-American journey,
paying special attention to the legacy of
the Civil Rights Movement, with his own
personal voyage. Where his focus before
would have been a romantic attachment to
the colorful past of his music, he clearly
shifts to a more critical message, while
stressing the relevancy of the subliminal
message wielded by the original blues
songsters. In his own words, this is not just
a loving nod to my heroes, it is a statement.
The measure of any true creator lies
in his capacity to never repeat or para-
phrase himself. With this truly innovative
work, Eric Bibb proves that he hasnt fini-
shed growing as an artist.

The seed of this album was planted in
the late summer of 2013. On September 11,
to be precise, an ominous date whose
symbolism hardly escaped Eric and myself
when we met that day in Paris, where he
was promoting his latest recording. I re-
member telling him that Jericho Road ma-
naged to salute the greatness of the Civil
Rights era while remaining relevant in the
21
st
Century. Quite a feat in the current
times of depression, when nostalgia is lur-
king around almost every corner of our
memories.
On that occasion, Eric couldnt stress
enough the similarities between today and
yesterday. In the post-war era, America
was fraught with violence and racism, he
said. For Martin Luther King, Jr. to adapt
the philosophy of non-violence to the Civil
Rights Movement-a movement that called
out across racial boundaries to all of huma-
nity-was a radical move. In this new millen-
nium, plagued by sectarian and tribal
conflicts, Kings radical approach is sorely
missed
In the course of this discussion, Eric
and I came up with the idea of revitalizing
the concept of the socially conscious
shows of the sixties, when the likes of
Odetta, the Staple Singers, Pete Seeger,
Peter, Paul & Mary and Bob Dylan joined
forces to address the problems of their
time. Thus was born We Have a Dream, a
tour that combined the individual out-
looks of Eric, Harrison Kennedy and Ru-
thie Foster (both present on Blues People),
giving a present-day impetus to the collec-
tive dream of a more tolerant world.
The recording of Blues People is the
result of a similar reality check. Another
way for Eric to contribute to the circulation
of a message of peace, hope, and non-vio-
lence. Not that his concern with the issues
of our society is anything new. The son of
actor, singer and social activist Leon Bibb
carries awareness in his DNA: I think that
part of me, the socially aware troubadour,
has always been there. Its certainly part of
my upbringing. Yet Blues People takes that
stance to a higher level, as he realizes that
he is now in a position to play a significant
role in the general picture of our times.
Looking back in time, one can only note
the change that came about in his music
in the space of a decade. With this new
album, his goal is to add to his music a
commentary that will stimulate the dialog
with his fan base. Just making a record of
nice songs may feel good on some level, but

Peace & Love,
Eric
