LESSON IDEA: WEBSITE-CREATION TOOLS

1
Name: Ashley Everett
Directions: Using the template below, describe how students could use a blog, wiki, or other website-
creation tool to learn required learning standards in your content area: For an A grade provide an idea that
reaches a Level of Technology Implementation of 4 or above. Remember higher levels (4-6) require that
students assume adult/professional roles; engage in higher-order thinking; and use technology
create/publish original content for their classmates and/or others beyond their school/classroom. The
learning activities and products should be engaging and meaningful to the students and to others who will
view/use/benefit from students work. Review your handouts on Engaged Learning, Authenticity, and LoTi.

Content Area/Grade/Standards/Topics Addressed:
HE5.2: Students will analyze the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology, and other factors
on health behaviors.
Brief Description of Learning Experience: What learning standards will be addressed? What will
students and teachers do? What products will students create? How will the project be introduced?
How long will it take to complete? What audience will use/care about the product(s) students are
creating? How broad is this audience? Students will learn how influences such as media and technology
affect health behavior with the help of using the computer. They will create their very own blog which will
include one article of choice pertaining to factors on health behavior. Using the information students gather
from websites, books, etc., they will upload that onto their blog, add texts, upload videos, add sound clips,
insert public announcements/ testimonies, create graphs, copy and paste statistics, and create images for
further understanding. The project will be introduced by the teacher who will display his or her personal
blog on factors that influence health behaviors. By showing this, it will give students an idea of certain
things that they need to be sure to include along with certain things that do not need to be added. This
activity should take no longer than 1 to 2 hours give or take (research, upload, insert, customize)
(especially for those who want to go above and beyond). The audiences that will use/care about this are the
students that are in that teachers class.

Remembering Understanding Applying Analyzing Evaluating Creating
Student Engagement: Which indicators of Engaged Learning area strong and why? (See Engaged
Learning and Authenticity handouts distributed earlier this semester.) The area in this activity that is the
strongest is seeing students teach themselves. Yes, they have been given enough information presented to
them by the teacher however, with that it is up to them to take what they have been given and formulate that
information into an awesome blog. (Teacher-directed and student-paced).
Level of Technology Implementation (LoTi): What LoTi would this lesson be and Why? (See
Engaged Learning handout distributed earlier this semester.) The LoTi that this lesson would be given is
a Level 4 (Integration). Here, students are integrating the use of technology (computers) to heavily assist
with their lesson being learned in the classroom.

Importance of technology: Why is using a website-creation tool critical to the project? Could the
project be completed without this technology? What would be lost without using it? What other
types of technology, if any, are going to be used in the learning experience? Using a website-creation
tool is critical to this project because it allows the project to come alive by going above and beyond. Yes
indeed this project could be completed without this technology. However, integrating the use of technology
with the project allows for a more hands-on and fun experience at understanding the lesson being presented.

Without using technology, there would be a loss of higher learning along with dullness (no umphh to it).
Other types of technology that are going to be used in this learning experience are the Internet of course, a
cellular device, voice recorder, and a camera.
Inspiration (optional): If you used existing example as a model for your project (whether in part or
whole), include the URL(s) so we can visit. Explain what concepts you borrowed from others.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: Briefly discuss some possible issues surrounding Internet safety
and student privacy that could arise while implementing this learning experience and explain how
you would (1) minimize risks to students/yourself; (2) alleviate any fears by parents/administrators,
and (3) follow common Internet Safety/Acceptable Use Policies. Some possible issues surrounding
internet safety include the following: exposure to inappropriate material, online predators, revealing too
much personal information, viruses and malware, chat-based services, and cyberbullying. In order to
minimize risk to students/ yourself, alleviate any fears by parents/ administrators, and follow common
Internet Safety/AUP you could do the following: set limits for which sites students will be able to access,
set rules when students are online, surf the internet with your child and let them show you what they like to
do online, talk to children daily about internet safety, learn the basics of internet safety, monitor all types of
technology because it can be mobile, and make sure to keep the computer in an area where everyone can
see it and have access to it at any moment.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. What are you trying that you have not tried
before? What do you hope to learn from this activity? How do you hope it will help students learn? I
want to be able to expand a childs education experience with the aid of several different types of
technology. With this activity, I want to be able to try to give children a lot more freedom when using the
computer (but only after talking to them about online safety). I have no doubt that it will help students learn
because technology seals the deal in a childs learning growth experience.
