Lesson Title: Shadows (Physical science and Math)

Lesson Time and Date: October 14 9:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m. Then everyday from October
15-22, 11:30 a.m.-12 p.m.
Lesson Aims
At the end of this lesson, students will learn concept of light and darkness and
measurement by measuring the length of their shadows during different times of the day.
This is an everyday concept that involves the use of shadows, which will pave way for
them to learn larger scientific concepts of light and darkness in the long run.

Teaching Skill Development (What do you want to develop as a teacher?)

Classroom management. Assessment as learning
Teacher as a facilitator of knowledge and skills learned.
Linking everyday concept to science concepts.
Communication skills.
Teaching and Learning Preparation (resources etc)
Chalk, paper, pencil, measuring tape, numbers, number line, different shaped-objects,
different transparency object

Session Structure
Lesson Phase
Orientation /Introduction
How best to motivate
and explain the
importance of this
lesson? This should be
for about 5 minutes
with links to prior
learning or
experiences.
Teaching
strategy/Learning
Activities
What will support the
students to learn the
concepts you are trying
to teach and to reach
the learning outcomes?
How will you cater for a
diversity of learning
needs?

Lesson Planner

Recall counting numbers.

Recall the concept of the number line to help the student in
understanding the concept of measurement.
Help children to make three different columns; time of day,
shadow length and body length

1.
2.

3.

Ask students to find partners.

Introduce the concept of shadows to students by telling
them to placed an object they brought under the sun to
cast its shadow. Tell the students to move the object in
different positions relative to the sun and report on what
they observed.
Do part 1 using their favourite objects

4.

Now, ask a student to stand still while you trace her

shadow on concrete with chalk, and help her/him label the
shape of the shadow by tracing its outline. Ask the student
to write his/her name and the time of day inside the outline
of the shadow.

5.

Tell the students to do the activity in pairs and record

their findings on a piece of paper.

6.

Encourage her to use the tape measure to find the

length each tracing, then record the measurements in her
chart.

7.
Discussion proper

Conclusion /Closure
How will you capture
the main ideas of the
lesson? Recap/revision
etc.

Assessment Strategies
What assessment
strategies are used
throughout this lesson?
These should be
closely aligned to your
lesson aims. How you
will you record student
learning outcomes?

Lesson Planner

Repeat this process a few times throughout the day.

1. Ask the students to report their findings in front of the
whole class.
2. Inquire of the problems encountered during the activity
or how successful were the groups in doing the activity.
3. At the end of the reports, ask the following questions:
a. is there a difference between the shape of the
object and the shadow it casted?
b. Who casts a longer shadow? a wider shadow?
c. When is a shadow longer?
d. Who among the students casted the longest
shadow?
e. How long is the longest shadow? shortest
shadow?

Discuss the concept of shadows, how it is formed and the

difference in the length based on the object casting the shadow
and time of the day. Discuss how cooperation among the
groups facilitated the success of the whole activity. Inquire if
leaders were anointed or the members of the group cooperated
equally in accomplishing the activity.

The narratives written by students about the shadow activity

will form the assessment of their learning through the shadows
lesson. This will highlight childrens creativity and expressing
their thoughts, knowledge and skills that they had gained
through this entire lesson.
Further learning (optional) : Did you know that the length of
your shadow also changes with the seasons?
