After viewing the class slide presentation on global disparity, answer the following:

1.

For the most part, each fact compares consumption by people in developed countries to that of
people in less developed countries. What is the comparison made by your fact?

The comparison made is the comparison of different incomes.

The poorest 20% of the population receive only 1.0% of the global income while the richest 5% enjoys
40% of all income.

2.

Why was this fact astonishing to you?

I find the size of the gap between the rich and the poor to be the most astonishing fact about this.

3.

What steps, if any, could and/or should be taken by the governments and individual people of the
world to alter the imbalance represented by this fact?

The government of the country could insist and rework the education systems and increase healthcare. If
the children of the nation have a stable and well structured education, they will be able to have
better jobs, therefor helping the countrys people along with its economy, thus creating a small
gap between rich and poor. If healthcare is taken more seriously and considered a priority, the
countrys life expectancy will increase.

1.
From the World Map, what is the dominant level of Human Development in each of the following
areas?

a.

World as a whole

The World as a whole seems to have a medium Human Development Index.

b.

Northern Hemisphere

The northern hemispheres dominant level of Human Development in each area is very high.

c.

Southern Hemisphere

The Southern hemispheres dominant level of Human Development in each area is low.

d.

North America

North Americas dominant level of Human Development in each area is very high.

e.

South America

South Americas dominant level of Human Development in each area is low.

f.

Europe

Europes dominant level of Human Development in each area is high.

g.

Africa

Africas dominant level of Human Development in each area is low.

h.

Asia

Asias dominant level of Human Development in each area is medium.

i.

Australia

Australias dominant level of Human Development in each area is very high.

2.

From the appropriate Regional Map, determine each of the following:

a.

the country in Central America with the highest level of Human

Development

Mexico

b.

describe the rough but clear relationship between latitude and level of
development in the world provide one explanation

The lighter latitude of a country the less job opportunities are available since the higher
the latitude is, the smaller variety of jobs are available, but also, it is harder to have
access to natural and crucial resources.

c.

the location and countries making up the region with the lowest level of
human development in Europe

Eastern Europe (Russia, Ukraine, Turkey) has the lower level of human development in
the continent.

d.

the predominant level of development in the countries of the Middle East

The predominant level of development in Middle Eastern countries is very high.

e.

the broad geographical distribution pattern of human development in Africa

The HDI levels in Africa go from Very High in northern part of the country, as we move
to central Africa, we can see that the HDI is poor but it goes up to a medium level in the Southern
part of the African Continent.

the countries in Asia registering the highest level of human development and the lowest

level of human development

High HDI level = approximately 5 countries

Low HDI level = approximately 4 countries

3.

From the Human Development Map explain the global distribution of human development based
on the theory of core and periphery.

4.

Select one country with a low human development index and review the country information
provided (and or visit CIA World Factbook). Suggest one policy to explain how that country
could overcome the problem of geography.

Afghanistan could put in policies on land exploitation, since that seems to be the root cause for all
of its problems. If such policy is put in place, it can help the land recover its natural minerals,
allowing fresh and drinkable water, more oil, more agricultural land and also allow the
replantation of trees, thus allowing clean and oxygenated air.

5.

Do you think countries with a low human development index require more or less globalization?
Give three reasons to explain why or why not.
