2nd Six Weeks Art Elements October 6- November 7

Instructions: You will pick two topics from the following. The first one will be due October 24 and the
final one will be due on November 6. Any time not spent on these projects will be spent on sketchbooks
or the independent project due at the end of the semester.
This six weeks will focus on the different art elementsline, texture, color, shape, form, space. Each
project will focus on one or more of these elements in detail. You must keep the elements in mind as
you are continuing your project.
Choose your projects quickly and get started right away. Any time lost deciding is time lost perfecting
your art and that can have tragic consequences on your peace of mind as well as your grade.
Have fun!
Projects:
1. Creating a still life in color theory. Artist will choose a still life topic to paint. Topic can be any
type of still life or even an abstraction of a common theme (think fruit or flowers). Artist will
then paint or draw the still life using any one of the following color schemes:
a. Monochromatic
b. Complementary
c. Split Complementary
d. Triadic
e. Analogous
Project 1 will require a rough draft to be turned into the teacher for approval. Rough draft
should not take more than two days to complete. Remember, it is a rough draft. Nothing has to
be beautiful or detailed. Just how the shapes will be laid out and an idea of where the colors
will be placed. Think of it like a rough draft to an English paper. You are just getting the big
ideas onto paper before moving onto the final, finished product.
Project Materials:
a. Canvas or Drawing Paper 11x14
b. Acrylic Paint or Colored Pencils (Oil Paint available by teachers approval only)
c. Acrylic Paint brushes (if chosen)

2. Close up of a shoe. Take a picture of your worn out sneakers. Crop the photo to focus on a
certain aspect and to balance out the frame. On an 8x10 piece of drawing paper create a
drawing plane and recreate your cropped picture in graphite. Focus on the texture and shading.
Make the image as realistic as possible.

Project 2 will require the cropped photo to be approved by the teacher. You might want to
bring in both the original and cropped photo for reference. This photo will have to be taken at
home and brought in to school (Read: please dont bring used sneakers into the classroom).
Consider the lighting of your photo. Washed out or too dark photos will not make for an
interesting drawing. Make sure there is an equal balance of light and dark.
Project Materials:
a. Photo of sneakers (approved by teacher)
b. Drawing pencils (refer to your supply list if you do not already have these)
c. Drawing paper 8x10 (white or grey)
d. Eraser, Blending stomp

3. Animal Zentangle Triptychs. Artist will create a three-paneled drawing that includes an animal
scene. Furthermore, the triptych (fancy name for three panels on an artwork) will be done as a
zentangle. Example on following page:

Project Three will require a rough draft to be turned into the teacher for approval. Rough draft
should not take more than two days to complete. Remember, it is a rough draft. Nothing has to
be beautiful or detailed. Just how the shapes will be laid out and an idea of where the colors
will be placed. Think of it like a rough draft to an English paper. You are just getting the big
ideas onto paper before moving onto the final, finished product.
Pinterest is an excellent source for finding different patterns for zentangles. There are even
several tutorials. Just type in zentangle and get inspired!

b. Drawing Pencils, Fine tip sharpies (available at walmart)

4. Linear Toothpick Sculpture. This project will have the most to explain, but the rewards are
worth it. Lets look at some examples first:

To create these sculptures you will be given 100 toothpicks. You will come up with a unit that
uses two or more toothpicks. This unit will be a geometric design that can be repeated. For
example, the photos above have triangles and the last one has squares.
Assembling the units takes time as you will have to wait for them to dry. Once you have made
as many units as 100 toothpicks will allow, you will begin to assemble the sculpture. You will

have to keep in mind how you are using both positive and negative space as well as how you are
leading the viewers ey e and what form you are taking with your sculpture.
Heres what youll do:
a. Students will be given approximately 100 toothpicks (pre-counted in a zip lock bag)
b. Students will begin by gluing two, three or four toothpicks together creating a unit. The
unit can be a geometric shape such as a square or triangle or as simple as two
toothpicks glued side by side. Make some thumbnail sketches of sculpture plan using
unit.
c. The student will then create as many units as possible using all the toothpicks. It should
be noted that construction of the units couldnt be done quickly. The wood glue will
take approximately 30 minutes to dry.
d. Once all units have been created students will begin to create a three dimensional form
using all the units. The form created must show movement, repetition, negative space,
and line.
e. Once the sculpture is created entire sculpture will be spray-painted all black, or white.
More than one coat may be needed to completely cover the sculpture.

Art Elements to Define: Line, Space, Form, Movement, Pattern

Commonly Used Terms:

Line is a mark made by a moving point. It directs a visual path from one point to another. In
sculpture, line can define the solid mass- it serves as the outline. We perceive the "edges" of the
surface as lines. In fact, these edges are planes, and this term should be used to refer to
sculptural forms.
Space refers to the area around, within, and occupied by the three-dimensional object, as well
as the way these areas interact. In sculpture, the sculptor must consider the positive space as
well as the negative space (the area around and within the structure) when planning a
sculpture.
Form a 3-D object. In drawing it usually refers to the shading that is done to a shape (see below)
that makes it appear 3-D. In sculpture it refers to the shape that is created by the visual lines.
Texture visual texture is the illusion that you can touch or feel something. Drawing soft lines to
create the look of fur is an example of visual texture. You are not able to actually feel it, but you
will see that it looks like fur.
Color reflected light
Shape a 2-D Object like a square or circle.
Movement is the path the viewers eye takes through the artwork, often to a focal area. It can
be directed along lines, edges, shapes and color.
Pattern is the repetition of texture, forms, colors, or other design elements. Such recurrence of
visual elements helps to unify the artwork and creates a sense of structure. Pattern, if used in a
regular and planned way, may also emphasize the main idea. If used in an unplanned or random
way, it can add a sense of energy and provide a variation on a theme that is unexpected and
exciting.
Monochromatic color scheme using only one color and the different values of that color (for
example, you may choose a blue, but then add black or white to it to make it darker or lighter)
Complementary color scheme using two colors opposite each other on the color wheel
(red/green, purple/yellow, etc) Orange/green is an acceptable substitute for the red/green
complementary colors.
Triadic color scheme using three colors equally spaced from each other on the color wheel.
Analogous color scheme using colors next to each other on the color wheel. Ex. Yellow, yellowgreen, green, blue-green, and blue.

Using complete sentences, describe how the art elements you just defined apply to your project. Why
is it important to consider elements such as line and space? Where would these elements be most
noticeable inside your project? For example, Im going to use shading on the foreground objects to
create a three dimensional form. This will give the objects depth and detail and draw the viewers
eyes towards them.
