Social Emotional Development Observation

Subject: NB, 20 months

Date/Time: October 31 @9:53am
Location: Toddler Classroom
NB grabbed his teachers hand. He pulled her from near the
dramatic play area. As he pulled, he said, Book. When he got
to the cubby area, he pointed up at the teacher books and said,
Bug, bug. The teacher took the book from the shelf and sat
down on the floor. NB clapped his hands and smiled. NB
moved in front of the teacher, turned around, and backed up until
he was sitting in her lap. They read to book together. When
they were finished, the teacher placed NB on the floor next to
her and stood up to put the book away. NB frowned, used sign
language for more and said, No, more bug. She handed him
the book. NB smiled and sat down to read the book again.

NB sat at the large table with a basket of blocks. He grabbed the
blocks one by one and made a tower. After building a stack of
three blocks, he looked at the teacher and smiled. He said.
Block. The teacher said, You built a tower with three blocks.
Can you put another block on top? NB picked up a block with
two hands and tried to put it on top of his stack. After that, he
tried to add a fifth block to his stack. The teacher said, Wow,
that is a tall tower, NB. Then, NB pushed his tower over and
said, Uh oh!. He laughed and started to build his tower again.

After naptime, NB watched as his teacher folded up his
classmates blanket and put it on their cot while he was
pretending to fill his pitcher of water in the dramatic play sink.
The teacher picked up the cot and brought it to the storage
closet. NB went over to his cot and tried to pick it up, still
holding on to his pitcher. NB scrunched up his face and grunted
what sounded like stuck. He dragged his cot for a few more
inches before putting down the pitcher and grabbing his cot with
two hands. His teacher came over and said, Can you help me
with the cot? She grabbed the other end and walked to put it
away together. NB smiled as he helped.

NB cried when the teacher closed the puppet prop box and put it
away in the storage closet. He went over to the door and pulled
on the handle. He said, Open and pulled on the handle for 30
seconds. When the door would not open, NB tried to push the
button on the baby lock. He tried for about 30 more seconds, still
crying and saying open. The teacher came over with an elephant
book. She said. Lets go read the elephant book. NB said,
No! and began crying and trying to open the lock again. The
teacher joined two other children near the book area and started
reading. After about a minute, NB stopped trying to open the
door and joined the story.

NB went for a walk with his teacher. He brought back Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What
Do You See? from another classroom. He put the book down on the floor when he went
to do a puzzle at the table. After putting three pieces into the puzzle, he looked up and
saw another child sitting with the book. He wrinkled up his face, and screamed Mine!
He dropped his puzzle pieces and ran over to the book and grabbed it out of the girls
hand. The teacher heard the girls cry and went over to NB, saying [Name] is reading
the book. Lets find another book to read. After taking the book from the teacher, NB
tried to hand the book to the other child and to take her book from her again.

Analysis
NB exhibits many social skills in the Emergence of an Organized Sense of Self range
of 9-18 months from Greenspans First Feelings: Milestones in the Emotional Development of
Your Baby and Child from Birth to Four. For example, he uses complex behavior patterns when
he pulled the teacher over to get her to take down the book he wanted. He also displays some of
the milestones in Creating Emotional Ideas from the 18-36 month range. He was engaging in
pretend play before moving his cot and he makes spatial designs with his blocks. It stressed that

these are not continually seen in development, but they are increasingly seen. NB is at the
beginning of this stage.
According to our readings on Erikson, NB is working on developing his autonomy. He is
gaining his independence, while still using his caregivers for support. This ties into the cognitive
development and his use of tools. When NB wanted something in during this observation, he
pulled his teacher over to help him get it. NB also wanted to be autonomous when he wanted
help put his cot away after nap time. He got frustrated at first when he couldnt do it. He was
much happier when the teacher let him help put it away.
To support NBs further development, I could foster the childs growing independence
and self-direction by letting him/her do things according to his/her own ability (WMELS, pg.
32). Within the classroom, I should support him by letting him wash his hands with less support
or try to put his hat on by himself. Not only does it let him develop his autonomy, but also his
self-esteem.
