Russian civil war 1917-1920- The Bolsheviks and non Bolsheviks were fighting.

The Bolsheviks wanted communism and the non Bolsheviks did not. This hurt
the soviet union because many people were dying.
Creation of the Politburo 1917- This was an executive committee set up by
Lenin for communism in the soviet union. This helped because it was the
governing body of the state.

Stalins five year plans 1928- His plan was to speed up industrial production
and growth. Businesses profited but many people were poor and hungry.
World war two 1939-1945- Soviet troops invaded and destroyed poland. This
showed the soviet unions dominance.
Free elections in poland 1945- Stalin feared that these free elections could
threaten his power.

Hydrogen Bomb 1946- After the creation of an atomic


bomb, the soviets created a hydrogen bomb to create a
bigger blast.
Joe 1 1949- This was the soviets first atomic bomb and
used as a weapon test.

Warsaw pact 1955- This was a collective defense treaty


among eight communist states of central and Eastern
Europe. This was an advantage to have if the soviets went
to war.
Sputnik 1957-This was the first satellite in space. It
showed that the soviets were technologically ahead.

Laika and sputnik 3 1957- Laika became the first animal to


be launched into space. She paved the way for human
flights.
Creation of the Berlin wall 1961- This was built to seal off
two sections of Berlin.

Invasion of czechoslovakia 1968- The soviets sent in


warsaw pact troops in to crack down on reformist trends.
This showed the soviets dominance.
SALT 1 1969- This was a negotiation to limit the stock of
nuclear weapons between the U.S and the soviets.

SALT 2 1972- This was one of the two round talks about armament control.
Perestroika 1985- This was a political movement for communism.
Chernobyl Disaster 1986- This was located in a power plant in Ukraine. It was

caused by a flaw in the designs created by the soviets.

Voting reforms by Gorbachev 1987- He restructured the


soviet union by using glasnost and openness. He was
awarded for his actions.
Glasnost 1988- This meant openness or a change in a
society. This was the cause of the fall of communism.

Soviet Afghan war 1979-1989- This was a conflict between


the soviets the afghans for communism and anti
communist muslims. Many soviets were killed.
Lithuania and Latvia protests 1988- These protests was a
peaceful political demonstration.

Gorbachev steps down 1991- The economy was poor, and Gorbachev lost most
of his power. Attempts to regain power failed.
Boris Yeltsin becomes president 1991- He was the first popularly leader
elected in the countries history. He pulled the country out of economic
trenches.

Fall of the Berlin wall 1992- This was a symbol of the cold war. Ended when
the head of east Germany announced that citizens of the GDR can cross the
wall whenever they please.
Gorbachev becomes leader 1996- He believed in glasnost which was a big
cause of the end of the cold war. He was awarded the nobel peace prize.
