Research Proposal for Inquiry into the Discipline of Business

In what follows, I introduce my research project, provide background information on the project
and a review of literature, and discuss my research procedure and methodology. I submit this
research proposal for your review and approval.

Introduction
My object of study for my research paper is to conduct an inquiry into the discipline of business
and its discourse community within the Business College. As an undergraduate, I need to
understand the power structures so that I may excel in my chosen field and therefore have
opportunities available to me after graduation. The purpose of the inquiry is to gather data
through several methodologies, which will be discussed in the body of work. The evaluation and
interpretation of the collected data will explain how a student who enters a discourse community
as a novice can resituate themselves closer to a position of power within the discourse
community. By examining certain components related to a discourse community, I will
demonstrate that students who successfully master these components facilitate their own
sitautedness within their discipline and determine their future success.

Literature Review/Background

This article is very important to us freshman starting our education for our certain
disciplines because we will come across the acceptance and the nonacceptance of the ways of
structures, references, and languages. Going into a certain discipline requires a certain
knowledge of what is expected in the way one carried themselves, communities, writes, and acts.
Knowing what is wanted by this discipline can help to not be an outsider. This knowledge will
help not only promotions and such, but can help you acquire a good reputation and get you
noticed quicker. Knowing how your discipline works mean success.
This article didnt talk about the business discipline, but I still found it relevant because
the message was generalized towards all disciplines. People can be looked down upon if they do
not meet the criteria that their discipline is looking for. It is easier to become an outsider that an
insider. Being successful requires knowledge in every aspect of your discipline; better to be
prepared then end up over your head. Its important to learn what your discipline wants before
completely entering it so you can start off on the right foot.

Procedure/Methodology

I will be scheduling an interview, making surveys, and sit in on an actual class for/of the
business discipline. This will help me truly see what the Business discipline is like, and help me
decide if it is what I want to do for a career. On top of that, I will be able to form a well written
and detailed paper directed towards helping others who are having the same questions about the
business discipline as I did.

Interviews

I have an interview with Dr. Posthuma on Wednesday October 22nd, 2014 at 11am where I will
ask him a series of questions that will help me get information from an insider in the business
discipline.

Surveys:

The survey will help give me valuable information from students who are participating in the
College of Business here at UTEP. This will help me find out what it takes to be a successful
student at this college, and what makes you become and insider.

Document Analyses: Text Books, Discipline Website, Course Descriptions, Class Syllabus,
Technology Usage, Study Habits, Post College Work Ratio

Site Observations: For my site observation, I realized that it is a very important building and
program at UTEP due to the way it is designed and advertised. When you step into the Business
building, it has a beautiful interior. Outside of the entrance, they have a sign that says #1
Hispanic Business School once again. This shows that they take a huge amount of pride in this
college and they make sure you know why. All the students were studying hard and it was quiet
due to that. This shows that is requires a lot of work to be successful here, but with dedication it

is possible. There was also a lot of people on laptops, which I figured because most things for
business are done with a computer, this showed that the school is very tech-savvy.

Conclusion
From my research, I expect to find out a lot about the discipline, anywhere from what the GPA
for acceptance, and what it requires to be successful in this college. I hope to decide if I am
going to change my major, and to see what it is like to be in this discourse community. I want to
find out study habits, the pride of the student, the work security, the job after college ratio, and
much more. This project will be extremely helpful for my dilemma at the moment.

In your conclusion, I want you to make a logical assumption about your data and what you
expect to find. Remember you are in the middle of a Research process, your final paper may not
reflect your initial assumption. This is perfectly fine.
