Overview of Deliverables !
Develop a suite of web-based learning objects for deep sea oil exploration and underwater
drilling. Each module is to be designed to be SCORM compliant, self contained, and deliverable
through a learning management system. Each module must contain an associated work based
context that immerses the learner in a realistic, problem-based that engage the learner to use
the content objects to solve the problems. Each module will contain smaller learning objects
that cover single learning objectives. The objects are to be repurposable, content-rich, and
include a self-test at the end. (Ertmer)!
The modules must exhibit an understanding of effective teaching and learning approaches. The
educational module should allow active, constructive learning opportunities creating learning
activities that engage the learner in active processing rather than mere knowledge acquisition.
Resources should be represented in authentic, real life settings in preference to textual
descriptions, they should be visually attractive, motivating to use, and organized logically.

Key Assumptions !
The Project Manager will ensure that the Proof of Concept will be completed with in the next 3
weeks. The Proof of Concept will include a 40% of the projects learning objects completed.
The Proof of Concept will be done at no cost to AVN because any concerns about loss of profit
from redoing the Proof of Concept should be weighed against the potential loss of reputation
from the projects failure. (Ertmer) !

!Project Justification:
!
Third Eye Media has created a sample learning object with an accompanying Proof-Of-Concept
that did not meet expectations of the AVN Project Manager. The projects Proof-of-concept did
demonstrate what they considered to be the key components of problem based and exploratory
learning. Plus, the Proof-of-concept did not meet the style and layout expectations of the
Project Manager. Third Eye Media has selected a team that will redo the Proof-of-concept at no
cost to AVN and still finish with in the agreed timeframe.
Overview of Deliverables:
Develop a suite of web-based learning objects for deep sea oil exploration and underwater
drilling. Each module is to be designed to be SCORM compliant, self contained, and deliverable
through a learning management system. Each module must contain an associated work based

Resources should be represented in authentic, real life settings in preference to textual
descriptions, they should be visually attractive, motivating to use, and organized logically.
(Ertmer)
!
Specific Project Objectives & Success Criteria:
!
The initial instructional design did not demonstrate what AVN considered to be the key
components of problem based exploratory learning and were not consistent with their
expectations for style and layout. AVN also believed the design was rudimentary and the
content was poorly structured with no clear pathway. The Project is to provide a proof of concept
at no cost to AVN with in the agreed timeframe (3 months). The Project will create an e-learning
4 of 15
WK7ProjEdingerA
environment that integrates interactivity for authentic engagement. The learning object will be
based upon an educational module that recognizes active, constructivist learners. The activities
will require learners to process the subject matter and encourage meaningful communications
between the learners. The e-learning platform will be visibly attractive, motivating to use and
organized logically for ease of navigation while representing the real life environment of deepsea oil exploration. AVN expects a proof of concept that includes 40% of the learning objects
completed. A successfully completed project will be worth $100,000 with the expectations of
further work over the next year. (Ertmer)
!
Scope Management Issues:
!
The project will include the creation of a constructivist e-learning environment that will
accurately represent the real life environment of a deep sea oil exploration, with an easy to use
navigation system, that follows the suggested learning sequence and can be easily split into a
series of reusable, independent learning objects.
!
Primary Stakeholders & Roles:
!
Project Manager: Oversee complete project, from assigning jobs, to creating schedules, keeping
people on schedule, to overseeing the instructional design and creation of Learning
Management System.
Subject Manager Expert: Expert in the field of drilling, oversees Instructional Design, ensuring it
covers all the skills needed in a specialized, skill-oriented field.
Instructional Designer: Design educational module that integrate interactivity for engagement
and learning.
MultiMedia Software Developer: Design Learning Management System that is visually
attractive, user friendly and engages the learner.
Product Simulator: Working with Subject Manager Expert, Simulator Tests Course materials to
make sure it meets the educational objectives of the client and covers all the skills need in a
specialized, skill oriented field.

In this case study, Third Eye Media is asking for a second chance to demonstrate their
ability to meet the needs of the Australian Vocational Network. After creating a non-satisfactory
product, Third Eye Media has agreed to great a new Proof-of-Concept that includes completing
40% of the learning products for no charge, while still finishing the product by the original
timeline. The above Work Breakdown Structure represents the projects expectations on Third
Eye Media Proof-of-Concept that were created by AVN.!

Generally efforts would cost $100 per hour. Because this is is a Re-doing of an already
failed project, Third Eye Media will be doing the Proof of Concept work at no cost.!
!
Learning Activity Creation = $100 x 75 hours = $7,500!
!
Learning Environment Creation = $100 x 75 hours = $7,500!
!
Simulation = $100 x 36 hours = $3,600!

Case Study 24 revealed the story of Margret Johnson and Third Eye media and
their work with Australian Vocational Network and the creation of a Deep-Sea Oil Rig
training module. Third Eye Media had provided a previous proof of concept which AVN
found to be terribly lacking and was threatening to find a new company to do the work
for them. In order to save the order, Third Eye Media guarantee a new proof of concept,
which includes 40% of the learning objects completed, by the original deadline, which
was only three weeks from the date of the agreement. Third Eye Media also agree to
complete the proof of concept at no charge to the client. In order to meet the 40%
completion goal, many aspects of the project needed to be created at the same time.
The Instructional designer will work with the Subject Matter Expert to create each
module. After the individual module is created, the Multimedia software developer will
create the platform in which the module will be delivered. And finally the module and
platform needs to be tested. The creation of the learning environment for Module 1 will
be created while the instructional designer creates Module 2, and the Product Simulator
will test Module 1 while the ID creates Module 3. Since many of these will be happening
at the same time the PM will be asked to supervise all aspects and have different
individuals in charge of each aspect, Instructional Designer, Multimedia Software
Developer and the Product Simulator. Also, since the proof of concept is due in 3
weeks, the modules will need to be created in a timely fashion, with each module being
created in only a weeks time.
