Diversity essay- Final
Diversity: an appreciation of Differences
Diversity is not equality but appreciation of difference. I agree with Michaels ideas
because he believes that there is a difference between people that cannot be changed but that
difference is what is to be celebrated. Michael said the difference is not a biological one, but a
social one and that the culture is what is to be celebrated. He talks about how we love race and
its sense of identity it gives us and how we do not love class or the amount of money we have.
Racial identity is just a form of difference that is thought to be a good kind of diversity.
Diversity is the celebration of racial identity and differences. our commitment to
diversity has defined the opposition to discrimination as the appreciation (rather than the
elimination) of difference. Difference is the key to racial identity and also the center of the
celebration of races that is diversity itself. When he refers to races he is not talking about the
color of the skin but what has come from that group as a whole. Foods, traditions, and languages
are all things that can be celebrated by everyone. Michael is clear to say that racism is a bad
thing but that race itself is a good thing. This quote from Michael is what this whole thing is
about. Diversity is not about dividing races up, but putting them together and celebrating what
makes each one different.

Michael makes a great point when stating that the culture is what makes each race
different. Diversity is centered on the belief that race itself is not a dividing point, but that the
culture each race has created is what makes each race different. This difference should not
separate one another, but should be like an adhesive and make each group closer and more
knowledgeable and understanding to each others plights. Being aware of the other groups
plight will make it easier for others to understand and help. Understanding the other cultures will
allow for diversity to thrive and create peace.
Money is not a divider for diversity. We love thinking that the differences that divide us
are not the differences between those of us who have money and those who dont but are instead
the differences between those of us who are black and those who are white or Asian or Latino or
whatever. Michaels meant within each class there is a race diversity that is to be celebrated
throughout the classes and classes can altogether be abolished. Appreciating differences is the
solution to class boundaries and also racism. Michaels said, we love race-we love identitybecause we dont love class. Race being the identity of a person and not an identification of
class is one of the last key points of this writing. Class is not a dividing line but only a way to
identify people with certain jobs. Class is not an indication of race because every race populates
every level class and the diversity in every class can be the same because of the difference of
race within each class.
Race is not a factor that is to be subdued, but is to be promoted in a way that celebrated it
from differences between everyone. Michaels paper on what diversity is does not describe
diversity as a racial difference but as a cultural difference that anyone can experience. This point
of view is a necessary role in keeping diversity alive and growing. Our generation is grasping

this idea but our kids are going to need to grow and nourish this idea till it blossoms society in a
way that will allow understanding and peace.
