The document provides writing prompts for an informal response essay assignment. Students are asked to choose between two topics for a 350-500 word essay: 1) Writing a letter to a former significant other arguing for getting back together, supporting the claim with three pieces of evidence and rhetorical appeals. 2) Writing a letter to a current significant other explaining why the relationship cannot continue, again with three claims, evidence, and rhetorical appeals. Proper academic writing is expected though grammar and mechanics will not be graded.

Directions: Write an informal response to the prompt below. The response
should be a minimum of 350 words and no more than 500 words. Because this is an informal response, I will not be grading for grammar and mechanics. This does not mean you should not turn in your best work. Remember, this is academic writing. This writing will count as a homework grade. Include your word count at the bottom of the page. Prompt: For this writing, you get a choice between two topics: You and your significant other just broke up. There is much crying and sadness on your behalf, youve eaten more donuts than you can count, and youve listened to Someone Like You so many times even your dog (or cat) is sick of you. Your task now is to write a well-organized, heartfelt argument in the form of a letter to your former SO which explains why you should get back together. You should have three claims and evidence to support yourself. Remember to utilize the rhetorical appeals. OR You have to break up with your significant other. Things just arent going to work, and you can feel it down in the part of your heart where you know all things deep and true like Drew Brees is the best quarterback bar none. Now, you must write a letter to your SO which explains to him/her why you can no longer be together. You should have three claims and evidence to support yourself. Remember to utilize the rhetorical appeals.
