Initial Anecdotal Observation: (What you saw and heard today at field practicum)
Age Group: Kindergarten
Child K walks over to the light table and looks down at the glass. Child K looks up than walks to Student K and
asks "can you turn on the light table for me?" Student K says " Yes I can" and walks towards the light table
bends down and flips the switch. The light comes on and Child K says " Where do I get the big paper?" Student
K says "I'm not sure ask Teacher K" Child K walks over to Teacher K and asks " Can I have a big piece of
paper?" Teacher K asks "Why?" Child K says "I want to do the stencil on the light table" Teacher K says "Oh,
okay." Teacher K walks over to the cupboards by the outdoor entrance and opens the bottom drawer. Child K
takes the paper from Teacher K and says "thank you" than proceeds back to the light table. Child K places the
paper on top of the light table and then reaches underneath the table for the stencil. Child K than places the
stencil on top of the paper and begins to use their pencil to trace the shapes.
Later....
Child K lifts the stencil off of the picture and looks at the picture on the light table. Child K yells out "Student K,
come see" Student K walks over to the light table and says " Wow that's very cool how did you do that?" Child K
says "I used this" while holding up the stencil. Student K says " Oh that's awesome I wonder what it would look
like if you coloured it in with markers and put it back on the table." Child K says "Can you help me?" Student K
says "Absolutely, let's go to the art table." Child K and Student K walk over the art table and begin to colour.
Dialogue & Reflections: This is the process of how you make meaning from what you saw and heard in
your initial observation. Use the prompts to the right and your course resources to support your process.
The developmental domains being used in this observation are communication skills, and fine motor as well as
using new materials to explore their multiple uses. The FDK document states that children select and use
materials to carry out their own explorations.(FDK, 2011, p119) The children love to play with anything new in
the classroom and explore their many uses. The children seem to know how to manipulate the materials to use
them on the light table to create a new picture. The children often like to talk about what they have created and
are interested in making new things to take home and show their families. The children can use these in many
ways such as props in the home area, painting in the art area, fine motor at the light table. The children interact
with the staff and the students as well as fellow classmates. This experience was a solitary experience because
only one sheet of paper can fit on the table at once and often the children to don't want to share a picture they've
made. Considerations to take could be the children know that they aren't allowed to turn on the light table alone
so it's a experience that needs some assistance from a staff member. This is a factor because some children want
to be able to be independent and often a experience like this takes time and their isn't enough time or space for
more than one child to play here at a time.

Record a descriptive observation focused on one or more of the

following areas:
1. Child(ren)
2. Environment
3. Early Childhood Professional
4. Families
5. Other
-Write only what you saw and heard (e.g. experiences; situations;
conversations; questions; interactions)..
-Record non-verbal communication, such as body language,
facial expression and voice tone.
-Use detailed, specific language (Who, What, Where, When).
-Remain objective by omitting your opinions.

Use specific examples from your observation to consider:

CHILD(REN):
- What key developmental domains and skills are the children using?
- What do children find interesting?
- What do they seem to know?
- What do they talk about?
- What do children do with materials?
- Who do they interact with?
- Group dynamics types of play
- Considerations of individuals within the group
- Diversity (Refer to glossary & course resources)
ENVIRONMENT:
- How might the following factors be influencing what you observed
(i.e. enhance or limit behaviour):
a) space (e.g. elements of design),
b) time (e.g. time of day; pacing and duration of experience) &
c) materials (e.g. accessibility; quantity; quality; safety;
diversity; etc)

Planned Response: This is based on your initial observation, dialogue and reflection. Use the prompts to
the right to describe your plan.
I plan to bring in X-rays of animals, human body parts and bugs and have them at the light table with paper and
pencils should the children choose to draw them. This will be done in the morning for the length of free activity
time. I will introduce my experience in morning carpet to ask the children what they think x-rays are used for and
what animals do they see or body parts. Strategy I will be using is questions, explaining, informing and telling
this will be conducted as a conversation with the children. Conducting a conversation will give me the
opportunity to listen to the children to help them make connections between prior knowledge and new
discoveries(FDK, 2011) Questions I can asked could be:
What animals do you see?
How do you think X-rays are made?
Have you ever seen a x-ray or has someone in your family had one done?
What could x-rays be used for?

Record your plan:

- What will you do (invitation? Or provocation ?)
- With whom?
- Where will it take place? (learning area? indoor/outdoor?)
- When will it take place? (time of day? how long/how often?)
- What materials and resources will you use?
- What is your role? What teaching strategy(ies) will you use?
Explain how this plan is responsive and inclusive:
Factors you might consider:

development, diversity, the importance of play, the value of

relationships, other etc.

Additional Questions Asked

My role will be to sit near the light table and observe how the children use the materials as well as answering
questions about what the x-rays are of. I will also be asking questions and I will be there to help children that
may need it.

Follow-up Observation & Reflection: This is what happened when you implemented your planned
response and what you have learned from the experience.

What happened?
o
What did you see?
o
What did you hear?
o
How did the experience support your anticipated focus
(refer back to Dialogue & Reflection)?

What did you learn (e.g. childrens abilities and skills; group size;
material choices; use of time and space; etc)?
What might you do differently next time you engage in a similar
experience?
