Yes four years after the Russian Revolution, Chechnya joined other nations to form the
Mountain Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. But one year later the Soviet Union seized
control of the area

He deported the entire Chechen population to Siberia and Kazakhstan because he accused them
of working with the Nazi invaders

Chechens were allowed to return to their homeland in 1957 when Nikita Khrushchev restored
the province amid de-Stalinization.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991Chechnya declared independence but Russia
would allow it. From 1994 to 1996, Russia fought Chechen guerillas. It ended whit Chechnya
staying independent

Started when Chechen militants invaded the neighboring Russian republic of Dagestan. Later in
1999 .Five bombs exploded in Russia over a ten-day period, killing almost three hundred
civilians. Moscow blamed Chechen rebels for the explosions and promted the start of the second
war. This war was shorter it ended in February 2000 with Russia taking over the capital of
Chechnya.

8. Prior to his death in 2006, the separatist Basayev was deemed to be responsible for the most
notorious event to that point in time. Identify this event. How many deceased militants in this
event were NOT Chechen? Why might this be a significant change in the Chechen Wars?
Basayev ordered an attack on a school in Beslan, a town in North Ossetia. More than three
hundred people died in the three-day siege, most of them children. There were thirty-two
militants, though only three or four were Chechens. Before it was just Chechen people but now
other group are involved too.
9. According to the American ambassador to Russia, what terrorist group is assisting the
Chechan rebels? How/why might Americans who were once sympathetic to the Chechen cause
for independence from the Russian Federation have changed?
the Islamic International Peacekeeping Brigade (IIPB) is the assisting group. It has ties with al
Qaeda. After 9\11 and Americans discovered that they were getting help from al Qaeda that
didnt want to help them anymore.
10. Do you believe the Russians should grant Chechnya their independence? Why or why
not? [Answer this question in paragraph format (minimum of six sentences).]
No Russian should not grant Chechnya their independence. They got their independence before
but they got too greedy and tried to gain more land. The area is also too unstable and unsafe to be
given the right to self-govern at the moment. There are radical terrorists there and if left alone
some bad is bound to happen. Maybe another ISIS could happen. They need to be monitored
until it is safe. They should be able to have independence eventually though. They deeply want
to be free. Radicalists are latching on to that cause.
