Subject of Report work: Normal consistency of hydraulic cement by vicat

apparatus

Date of Submission: 11/ 11 / 14

Submitted by: Zuhair Nadeem Student No. 128277

Objective of the Experiment:

This experiment helps to determine water content for tests like initial and
final setting time compressive strength.

Instruments:

Conical Ring
Glass plate Water
Balance
Timer
Mixer + Bowl
Vicat Apparatus

Procedure:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.

Take a clean bowl, put it on the weighing machine and reset it to 0.

Take 180g of water and drop it in the bowl.
Now take 650g of cement and drop it too.
Allow 30s time interval for the absorption to take.
Start the mixer at speed of 140 rpm for half a minute
Pause the mixer for 15s and scrap down into the patch to remix the try

particles
7. Mix again now at speed of 285 rpm for a minute.
8. Take off the cement, by use of hand make it into a circular figure.
9. Toss it from one hand to other at least 6 times.
10.
Fill the vicat mould will the cement paste and smoothen the
surface, levelling with the mould
11.
Lower the plunger gently that it touches the surface of the paste,
also the initial level should be 0.
12.
Release the plunger and start the time.
13.
Let the plunger sink, measure the penetration, record it with the
time.

Calculation and Graph:

Percentage of water by weight of dry cement required to prepare cement

paste can be calculated from the formula
P= (W/C) X 100

P= Percentage of water
W= Quantity of water added
C= Quantity of cement used

Water with cement ratio can be calculated

= W/C

Results and Discussion:

Depth measured was 7.5mm
Water with cement ratio was 180/650 = 0.27

Conclusion:
To obtain a fair result all apparatus used should be clean, room temperature
need to be maintained. If the value is <10 Remove access water, if >10 add
more water.
