Needs Assessment

Our middle school is one-to-one with iPads, and we are looking do the same in our 3-5
classrooms.
I have bulleted out the different tools that I have access to at my school to assist
my students. iPads and computers provide to be the best resource for me
because they allow me to use apps and programs to assist my students in the
areas that they need the most help.
Electronic math and reading worksheets. These worksheets allow the students to
practice their skills with assistance from the application.
Reading A-Z this is a comprehensive reading program that helps my students at
all levels. With the RAZ program, my students can listen to stories, read stories,
and take comprehension quizzes that focus on their specific areas of need. This
program tracks their progress, and allows for me to tailor what they work on to
their specific needs.
Timers and clocks to assist students who have trouble with time management.
We have both digital clocks and iPads that we use for this. I prefer the iPads
because the app that I use has a stoplight on it, so for example, it will be green
for 5 minutes, yellow for two, and then red. The yellow light warning helps the
students see that the time is getting close!
Instructional software I have access to both computers and iPads in my
classroom, so I can use both websites and CD-rom games to help students who
are struggling. Having different programs such as Touch Money helps me with
instruction because I can divide the class into different groups and use small
group directed instruction and technology to target different needs.
Screencast and Show Me (ipad) I use screencast in my classroom to record
lessons or demonstrate how to do certain tasks. For example, we were learning
number bonds, which is a very different way of teaching fact families that many
parents were not used to. I recorded myself demonstrating how to do the
problems, and posted it on Edline for the parents. This method is also helpful for
students who process lessons more slowly because it allows them to watch the
lesson again (and again).
Kindle for the iPad make the font larger for students who have trouble seeing,
and click on a word that they do not know the meaning of, and it is defined
within the app.
Guided Access on the iPad one of my favorite tools! This is in the settings on the
iPad, and this allows the teacher to lock a student into the app that they are
working on. Because of this, students cannot get distracted by other apps (or
the ads that appear in the apps) and can better stay on task.
SoundNote this is a recording device that I used at my old school. This was
good for students who had trouble following the lesson. It allows the students to
record the lesson and go back and listen to it at home.
Too noisy I use this app on my iPad almost everyday. This is a noise regulating
app. I use it to help my students who have trouble staying quiet and staying on
task. It helps them control their voice level because they can see it on the
screen.
Quizlet the online and app version of quizlet are awesome for helping students
both with and without learning differences. I love using this app for sight word
and spelling words in my first grade class because you can read and listen to the
word being said. When I tutor, I use this app to help my students study for
different tests. For vocabulary, the app with read the word and the definition for
you. This really helps the students who are not confident readers be able to hear
the definition, and gives them some studying independence.
that a lot of these tools and technologies would help in my own classroom.
Smart Boards allow for classroom notes to be saved and printed for students,
especially those who have trouble copying the notes from the board. Smart
boards also increase student participation, and help the teacher utilize
multimedia to present lessons.
Document cameras students can follow along with the teacher on the screen.
Electronic Textbooks allow students to follow along with the teacher on the
screen.
For teachers, there are numerous blogs, message boards, and teachers pages
that allow teachers to share what tools work for them, and to find resources for
what they need. An example of one is, http://forums.eslcafe.com/student/.i

Equitable Access
Our school has provided one computer, one iPad, one document camera, one
SmartBoard, and one projector for each classroom teacher. We have 2 computer labs
that teachers can sign up for. We also have three laptop carts, and seven iPad carts
that teachers can sign up for using Google Docs. In addition to this, 10 homeroom
teachers have class sets of 5 iPads. Our middle school has initiated a one-to-one
program, and each middle school student has a school-provided iPad.
NETWORKS
Teachers have been using Google Drive to store and share lesson plans, weekly
bulletins, assessments, data, and professional development documents.
Goal:
The goal is to train each grade level how they can best use the iPad in their own
classroom. Our school is K-8, and because of this, what the best use of an iPad in K is
not the same in 8th. The goal is to create a group of experts, one/two from each level
(K-2, 3-5, 6-8). In addition to teacher experts, we would like to create a leadership team
of students who can help other students with iPad support, and who can provide ideas
for how to use iPads within the classroom.

Professional Development:

Finances:
Technology Budget: (sent from our IT)
1. The schools budget is around $75,000 for the year to cover software,
hardware, maintenance, and disposables like ink/toner.
2. We have a wireless network from Ruckus Wireless. There are about 10 access
points in the school. WAN is not needed since we are all on same campus, but
there is a LAN.
3. Student technology comes in the book bill that is sent to the parents.
Investments:
Since the school does not pay for the new technology that will be coming in, it is part of
the student book bill, I feel that the biggest need would be for the training of the
teachers. This is something that we could write a grant for, but since we have not yet
decided who we would want to do our training (or if we would want to keep it in
house) we do not know the investment we would need. Also, if it is not too much, we
could perhaps get it funded by our PTA or Model Parent Association or the Alumni
Association.
Appendices
Since we have not yet implemented any of these ideas, I have included the email from
my IT who helped me develop this plan. Otherwise, I would survey the staff on Google
Docs. We keep our committee minutes on Google Drive, so we would store all of these
minutes there.
