Mini Lesson Planning Tool for Integrating Technology

Title of Lesson: Desert v. Rain Forest

Curriculum / Content Area: Science
Grade Level: 5th Grade
PURPOSE / OBJECTIVES:

When given a graphic organizer on a Promethean Board, students will

compare and contrast a desert or rainforest habitat with the habitat they
live in with 100% accuracy.
CURRICULUM STANDARDS:

5th Grade Science (9) Describe the relationship of populations within a

habitat to various communities and ecosystems.
5th Grade Technology (9) Use technology tools to organize, interpret,
and display data.
ACTIVITIES:

The teacher will draw a Venn Diagram on the Promethean board.

The students will come up and add environmental facts to the
Desert and Rainforest side.
The teacher will then draw a T-chart on the Promethean board.
Then the students will pick an animal or plant to add to each side.
Once the students have completed the Venn Diagram and the Tchart on the Desert and Rainforest, the teacher will pull up a
Double Bubble graphic organizer and the students will work
together to fill it out describing the difference between a Rain
Forest and Desert with their own habitat.
Answer the following questions:
1. Do I know how to use the technology tool(s) that will be used by my
students?
Yes, I have had experience using the Promethean Board and feel confident using
the pen and drawing a Venn Diagram, as well as pulling up a Double Bubble
Organizer and helping them fill out both organizers.
2. What technology skills do my students already have that are needed for
this lesson?
The students will need to know how to use the pen for the Promethean Board
and correctly write on the board.
3. What technology skills will they need to learn to complete this lesson
successfully?
The students will need to learn how to operate the pen in order to move graphic
organizers instead of write with it.

4. What is the appropriate setting for this lesson (classroom, lab, library,
home)? Is this setting available for my students to use?
The students will be able to do this lesson in the general education classroom
using a Promethean Board. This setting is available for these 5 th graders because
they have a smart board in their classroom.
5. What tools and resources will I need? (List of all Web sites, specific
software and hardware, and other needs.)
Promethean board
Promethean pens
Venn Diagram
Double Bubble Graphic Organizer
6. How much time do I need to allow for this lesson?
This lesson will probably take about 30-45 minutes total.
7. Who can help me with the planning and/or implementation of this lesson?
The technology coach could help if I had any problems with the Promethean
Board.
8. How will I assess the students learning?
In the Double Bubble graphic organizer, there are six contrasting blanks and two
comparing squares. In order to be considered proficient, students must have all
eight blocks correct with accurate comparisons and contrasts.
