LEARNING DEVELOPMENT
What is it?
The teacher understands how
learners grow and develop,
recognizing that patterns of
learning and development
vary individually within and
across the cognitive, linguistic,
social, emotional, and physical
areas, and designs and
implements developmentally
appropriate and challenging
learning experiences.
How do I do it?
Each student is different and
its important that they get
one-on-one or small group
instruction to differentiate to
their needs. Accommodating
to students physical,
emotional, and developmental
needs is essential for their
educational well-being.
Development Practices
Weekly reading assessments help determine student assessment
on comprehension, vocabulary, and phonics. These assessments
help determine and with the technology our school uses is able to
break down what standard might need to be retaught in class, or
which standards have been mastered. This technology allows for
easy analysis on student weekly performance. Weekly spelling
tests on spelling patterns are also a good strategy to assess
students weekly development: have the students mastered this
spelling pattern, do they still need work, are there certain areas in
this spelling pattern that the student needs help with? For
example, I recently tested students on the -le spelling pattern,
one student in particular had a dicult time when there were
double letters in the word such as middle.
Many students who are struggling severely are receiving either
pull-out RTI services, or in-class small group Tier 2 RTI services
working on spelling patterns, comprehension, vocabulary, and a
weekly reading skill.

Respecting Learners
Knowing a learners strength and
boosting their confidence in
learning is important. If a student
is struggling due to a lack of selfconfidence, pointing out their
strengths and using them to your
advantage as a teacher is
important. I can then use their
strength and stretch their
thinking in a higher level thinking
about a topic, and allowing them
to be a learning coach in the
classroom to help those around
them.
