Introduction 11

B. Use a flow nozzle if the flowing fluid contains moderate

amounts of solids in suspension.

C. Use a Venturi tube if the flowing fluid contains large

amounts of solids in suspension or if a saving * of a

few pounds in discharge pressure would rapidly pay-

off the extra investment through power savings.

D. Use a Venturi tube for better measurement of viscous

fluids.

Orifice Meter Runs

For accurate measurement of flows requiring orifices less than

.25" bore, use of a laboratory-calibrated orifice meter run is

recommended. It should include a length of pipe equal to at

least 10 pipe diameters on the upstream side and at least 5 pipe

diameters on the downstream side. When installed for service,

the usual precautions regarding length of straight pipe to the

nearest source of disturbance should be followed.

Complete prefabricated meter runs are also frequently used

in the larger sizes. Although it is possible to do a thoroughly

adequate construction job in the field, the more complete facili-

ties for machining, welding, gauging and inspection, together

with more comfortable working conditions at the manufacturer's

plant, tend to produce more satisfactory results.

ELEMENTARY LIQUID PIPING LAYOUTS

Liquid meters (except when air or gas purge systems are used)

should preferably be mounted below the line. (See Fig. 10628)

If the pressure in the system is always such that a positive

pressure always exists at the highest point in the downstream

piping lead, satisfactory results may be obtained with the liquid

meter located above the line. (See Fig. 10630)

Whenever the flow of a corrosive liquid, highly volatile liquid,

or highly viscous liquid is being measured, it may be advisable

to prevent the flowing fluid from entering the connecting lines

and meter chambers by using liquid seal chambers filled with a
