1. The Ancient Engineer
De Camp, L. Sprague. The Ancient Engineers. Cambridge: MIT, 1970. Print.
In Text: (De Camp)

This source has potential to use information and facts to draw attention to our
presentation. The book compares the ancient worlds of Egypt, Greece, and Rome; and
how engineering was a factor for all of the success of these races. The book mentions
how inventions from ancient worlds helped nations prosper while other nations failed to
survive in the same conditions. It also covers how these advances in technology impact
our lives today, many centuries later. One positive opportunity this book offers is the
description of older world technologies and how they impact our life today. However,
one negative comment for this source is that it is an older book and the information
covered in the book is a bit different from what we want to present.
I feel that this may not be the most helpful source, buUs_some..thing-.1hatwe_could
use to =-gain the attention of the audience. This book offers many facts about technology
that was developed centuries ago, but these inventions are still relevant. Our presentation

LeNoir 2

may cover how engineers make an impact in the world, and facts from this book may be
helpful when presenting that information.

This source is the American Society of Mechanical Engineering home page. This
website will be helpful when presenting information on mechanical engineering. The
....

ASME website also covers information about what mechanical engineers do and
discusses the impact of engineers on the world. Specifically, this website will help with
job opportunities and impact of mechanical engineers. There are also articles within the
website. -These articles specifically explain the impact of mechanical engineering and
developments oftechnology.

Most articles are very recent and cover a wide variety of

technology in the world.

This website will be very helpful for future research, facts, and pictures for this
project, and especially with the mechanical engineering portion. The articles within the
website are also interesting and could be helpful to supply information about
advancements in mechanical engineering and what a mechanical engineer does.

3. Why engineering is as good as an Oxbridge degree for boosting your salary.

Harris, Stephen. "Why Engineering Is As Good As An Oxbridge Degree For Boosting
Your Salary." Engineer (Online Edition) (2014): 2. Business Source Complete.
Web. 2 Nov. 2014.
In Text: (Harris)
This magazine article was very interesting and contained some useful
information. The article itself discussed the financial portion of engineering and
mentioned the need for engineers. One of the more surprising facts was that, "In fact,
those with mechanical or general engineering degrees from all universities do about as
well as the average Cambridge graduate and better than those from Oxford. And chemical
engineering does better than anyone university" (Harris). These interesting facts about
engineering are a positive reason to use this source. Unfortunately, the article does not go
much more in depth than a couple of interesting facts. This source is also not backed up
by many facts or research, which is also concerning.
Overall this article has potential, we may not be able to use very much
information in the article, but the information we do use will be interesting and
surprising. This source can specifically be used for shocking information that will catch

the attention of the audience.

4. Impact Of Engineering Solutions on Society

Hines, Sandra. "Impact of Engineers on Society: Differentiating Practical from Merely
Possible." Welcome to Michigan Engineering. Mconnex, 18 Feb. 2013. Web. 3
Nov. 2014.
In Text: (Hines)
This article focused on an interview focusing on the skills required for
engineering. It may be difficult to use information, but may help with the generalities of
engineering. Also, this article may help if we are still interested in incorporating job skills
an engineer requires. One positive about this source is that the topic of this information is
a major topic that we want to present. One negative comment for this source is that it is
an interview, so information will be difficult to gather and not as reliable as other
sources.
This source is really not that helpful, but if we are interested in presenting a
portion about how an engineer needs to behave, then it may be helpful. Otherwise, I do
not think we will use this source for anything other than to research specific information
from the interview.
5. Impact of engineers on society: Differentiating practical from merely possible

This source was a PowerPoint presentation by a college professor focusing on

impacts of engineering. The presentation goes in depth about advances in engineering
and the overall impact these changes has on the public. Specifically, this article discusses
more about the advancements in energy and the impact on the public. This article also
discusses possible outcomes for future development in energy development. Other
specific topics include the impacts of certain engineering careers, such as computer
engineering. This source may not be perfect, but it is somewhat helpful because the topic
is very similar to our semester long topic. Unfortunately, this source is not very reliable
because there is not much evidence of research and using this information may be risky.
This source is not great for using, especially since it is a presentation, however
~

there is some interesting facts and useful pictures. This may be source to consider when
putting together facts, however, information used from this source may require future
research.
6. 2014 ENGINEERING SALARY SURVEY ENGINEERING BY THE Numbers.
Mraz, Stephen. "2014 ENGINEERING SALARY SURVEY ENGINEERING BY THE
Numbers." Machine Design 86.11 (2014): 42. MasterFILE Complete. Web. 2
Nov. 2014.
In Text: (Mraz)
The primary focus of this article is the salaries of the different types of engineers.
This article goes in great depth about the different salaries for all types of engineering
related jobs. The most important part of this source, is the use of pictures and graphs. The
article covers a wide variety of engineering careers and visually depicts this with many
graphs and pictures. These pictures and graphs is one positive reason to use this source.

-,

LeNoir 6

One negative reason to use this source would be that the only information covered is
salary based facts. Another negative is that some of the pictures involve smaller text
which may be difficult to read.
1because of the use of all the different graphs.

This article will be ~crediQl

A visual depiction is required for the presentation and this source will be very helpful to
create or use one. I believe that we will defiantly use this source for visuals and for
information about salary.
7. Engineering.
Steininger, Judith L., B.A., M.A. "Engineering." Salem Press Encyclopedia Of Science
(2013): Research Starters. Web. 2 Nov. 2014.
In Text: (Steininger)
This article is very broad and talks about all forms of engineering. The
information in this article is mostly basic facts about the foundations of engineering. The
article covers career opportunities to the impacts of engineering. This article will help
build a foundation of information for the presentation and future research. One positive
comment for this source is that this source will help use with future research and will act
~

as a foundation for our facts. One negative comment is that this source is not very
specific.
This article will be helpful to introduce our topic and to cover the basics of
engineering. So, I can see this source being helpful, but it may not be a source that we use
in our presentation.

8. Making Connections: The Role of Engineers and Engineering Education

Bordogna, Joseph. "Making Connection: The Role of Engineers and Engineering
Education." Engineering Culture. NAB, 1 Jan. 1977. Web. 22 Oct. 2014.
In Text: (Bordogna)
This article focuses on the perspective of an engineer and the skills required.
Bordogna goes in depth with information about what an engineer does and what is
required to become an engineer. The article also focuses on what society expects from
engineers and how engineers need to fulfil this need. This source may be helpful when
discussing information about daily obstacles for engineers. The only downside for this
article is that we are unsure that will cover the information about daily lives of engineers.
The article is ,helpful and may be able to help ifwe want to present information on
what an engineer does and what the society wants from engineers. I believe that this
source will be helpful if we want to discuss information about what an engineer is about.
Otherwise, this article is not that helpful.

This is the American Society of Civil Engineers. This website is similar to the
ASME's website, but focuses of civil engineering. This source can help with the
information required for the presentation of civil engineering and the impacts of civil
engineering. This source also covers developments in civil engineering and can discuss

-----

the opportunities civil engineering has to offer. This website may be as helpful as the
ASME~ite,

---....

only the information will cover civil engineering.

-.

LeNoir 8

This source will be helpful with presenting information for the civil engineering
portion of the presentation. Also, this source offers many articles that may be helpful.
Finally, this source is a very reliable source, so I believe we will use this website as a
source.
