traditional print, digital, and online resources in reading and writing instruction.
B. ISTE (or NETS*S)
i.1. Creativity and innovation: Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct
knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology.

environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance,
to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others.

i. Read and comprehend literature, including stories, dramas, and poetry, at the
high end of the grades 45 text complexity band independently and proficiently.

ii. Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding
words.
iii. Use combined knowledge of all letter-sound correspondences, syllabication
patterns, and morphology (e.g., roots and affixes) to read accurately unfamiliar
multisyllabic words in context and out of context.
iv. Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
II. Grade level: 5th
III. Time needed to complete assignment: 2 3 class periods (depending on how many times a
student would like to record him/herself)
IV. Materials: computer, student selected childrens book, Audacity (free audio editor and
recorder)
V. Learning targets: the students will read text with proficiency and demonstrate awareness of
pace, accuracy, enunciation and expression
VI. Procedures of the assignment
A. The teacher will tell the students that they will be using a program called Audacity to
make an audio book for their kindergarten buddies.
B. The teacher will take the students to the library so they can select a book to record for
their kindergarten buddies.
C. After returning to the classroom, the teacher will review what it means to read fluently
and with expression and emphasize the importance of pace, accuracy, enunciation and
expression.
i. Pace means not reading too slowly and not reading too fast. Pace also means
recognizing and acknowledging the punctuation marks, especially commas and
periods and dashes.
ii. Accuracy means pronouncing each word correctly and being consistent with
the pronunciation of (for example) a characters name.
iii. Enunciation means talking clearly. Each word should be heard and it is
important to make sure that your voice doesnt drop (get lower) at the end of a
sentence or page.
iv. Expression means making sure that your voice matches the tone of the story
and the emotions of each character. Expression means recognizing the

punctuation marks, especially question marks and exclamation points, and taking
note of the words written in all capital letters and words that are not.
D. The teacher will tell students that for homework, they will need to practice reading the
book aloud.
E. The next day, the teacher will model how to use Audacity.
F. The teacher will give the students time to practice with Audacity.
G. The teacher will require that all students record themselves reading the book that they
selected before the end of the week. (The teacher will reserve the computer lab and
schedule time slots for each student.)
