Research Question: How is overfishing affecting the world?
Working Thesis Statement: Overfishing has a large impact on the world, not only dealing with
the fish population but also with what we eat.
Refined Thesis Statement: Overfishing has a big impact not only on the human aspect but also on
the environmental aspect.
Brewer, T. D., et al. "Effects Of Human Population Density And Proximity To Markets On Coral
Reef Fishes Vulnerable To Extinction By Fishing." Conservation Biology 27.3 (2013):
443-452. GreenFILE. Web. 8 Oct. 2014.
Coral reef fisheries are responsible the livelihood of tens of millions of people yet,
widespread habitat degradation and unsustainable fishing are causing severe depletion of stocks
of reef fish. Understanding social and economic factors affect fish stocks is vital to sustainable
management of coral reef fisheries. Human population density is a big part of the drive to
unsustainable fish stocks. The modernized fishing gear also has a huge footprint in the drive to
unsustainable fish stocks. Increased use of simple everyday fishing gear such as simple fishing
nets or multiple lines in the water can tangle up fish and cause slow but definite decline of the

population. This article has a lot of information on human drive, economic drive, and market
proximity drive, and gives a nice bit of information that is much need for the understanding of
fish sustainability.
Driscoll, Sally, and Tom Warhol. "Overfishing: An Overview." Points Of View: Overfishing
(2014): 1. Points of View Reference Center. Web. 9 Oct. 2014.
The debate over ocean fishing rights and responsibilities takes place between the
commercial fishing industry and conservationists worldwide. The demand for fish has been
spurred by nutritionists and doctors who promote the health benefits of fish over red meat. To
fulfill the demand, the fishing industry has came up with other types of fish as substitutes for
cod, mackerel, shark, herring, and other types that have been overfished. The NOAA fisheries
service reports that over a quarter of all fish species in the ocean are in danger of extinction. The
United Nations FOA estimates that over 25% of all fish that are trapped in nets are bycatch,
which includes any fish or animal that is unusable or not licensed for fishing by the vessel. This
article shows many points of view and offers great information about many different areas of
overfishing.
"The End of the Line: How Overfishing Is Changing The World And What We Eat." Science
News 170.26/27 (2006): 419. Science Reference Center. Web. 7 Oct. 2014.
Over 75% of the worlds fish populations are overfished. The muddiness and
extreme build up of algae are direct consequences of overfishing. Over fishing is
becoming a problem everywhere even in the poorer countries that dont have the nice 21st
century fishing technology like the wealthier larger countries such as China or the U.S.
These poorer countries waters are being overfished because wealthier countries fish their
coasts. Sophisticatedly increasing fishing technology such as sonars, global positioning

systems, and three-dimensional underwater mapping are reducing risks to fisherman and
leading to more abundant, more reliable catches. The United States restaurant industry
impacts this cause tremendously by selling endangered fish in high end restaurants. This
article shows the true problems that come with overfishing.
