Third Peak to Peak concert to be Saturday

ecause Estes
Park and the surrounding valleys
seem to be a magnet for professional musicians, the Peak to Peak
Concerts Series was established last year to showcase some of their individual talents. The sponsors of
these free, chamber music
concerts, the Oratorio Society of Estes Park (OSEP)
and the Allenspark Community Cultures Council
(ACCC) scheduled seven
monthly concerts last year
and have added two more
this year. This month the
third Peak to Peak concert
in the 2014-2015 series will
feature two of last years
favorite ensembles.
Local residents will once
again be able to enjoy
music by the Q2 Strings
and The Four French
Horns on Nov. 22 at 3 p.m.
at Shepherd of the Mountains Lutheran Church
(SMLC) at 2000 Ptarmigan

The five Q2 string players,
who have been sight-reading chamber music together for several years, are the

and Julie Esposito followed

in music from both Truman State University and
Bowling Green State University. Since many band
arrangements are written
for four horns, the band
directors then began to
anticipate a much wider
repertoire. Finally, Jerry
Brubaker, the fourth horn
to arrive (just last year),
completed the quartet. He
knows arranging. He is an
exclusive composer and
arranger for Alfred Publishing Co. Inc., having
published over 300 works
for band, symphony
orchestra and chorus. With
a bachelors degree from
the Eastman School of
Music and a masters from
The Catholic University of
America, he served for 30
years in the United States
Navy Band in Washington,
DC, as a French horn soloist and, ultimately, as the
Navy bands chief composer/arranger. Whenever he
thinks one of the Four
Horns arrangements need
improving, he simply
rewrites it.
The Four Horns portion
of the program will include
a wide variety of pieces,
from the classic composers, Bach, Mozart, and
Bruckner, to a traditional
hunting song, themes from
Jurassic Park and Harry
Potter, and a bit of Christmas music too! They have
chosen music to entertain
as well as to inspire.

he recent weather
made me realize it is
time for me to start
wearing T-shirts. I
know most people wear them
nearly all the time and certainly during the summer. I
dont, I put on a T-shirt under
my long sleeved shirt when
it starts getting cold. I wear
long sleeved shirts and long
pants, year round, and boots.
I cant think of a time when
Ive owned a pair of flip-flops.
I wear a hat, commonly
called a cowboy hat all the
time, straw in the summer,
felt in the winter. On really
cold days, if Im not going to
be riding in amongst snow
laden trees, I might wear a
cap with earflaps. Lately, I
occasionally wear a baseball
cap, but that has only happened in the past couple
years or so.
I guess Im pretty much set
in my ways. There are reasons why Im so stubborn
about what I wear. Lets start
with why I wear a western
hat, with its large brim.
My dad(Pops) was helping
work some cows for George,
a friend of ours. A cow made
a beeline toward the gate and
Pops got his horse in front of
the cow, they got knocked
down and he ended up with a
badly broken arm. Right in
the middle of haying season.
Pops ran the International,
pull type baler, behind an M
tractor with a PTO that shut
off when you pushed in the
clutch. He couldnt shift the
tractor into neutral quickly
enough when the windrow
got heavy and you had to
stop, or slow down, yet keep
the baler going at the same
rate.

I had to take over the baling. It meant I would have to

clean out the bale chamber,
or the pickup reel whenever
the baler got plugged up.
Pops said I should wear a
cap, so it wouldnt be
knocked off my head when I
climbed in and out of the baler. It made sense, so I had on
a ball cap the first day I started baling.
We were baling for the
same fellow Pops was helping with the cow work. My
first morning with the baler,
George was harrowing a
field right next to the hayfield. There were hundreds
of sea gulls following him
around, feeding, flying
ahead, feeding again, etc.
They didnt stay directly
above the field George was
on. They flew above the hayfield as well.
One of them, directly over
my head, not thirty minutes
after I started baling, had to
defecate. Right down the
back of my neck. I dont
think it even left a mark on
my cap or shirt collar. It was
a direct hit.
I got cleaned up, threw
that cap away, and put my
brimmed straw hat on. If a
seagull tried that again, it
would have to figure the trajectory exactly right to get a
direct hit under that brim
and down my neck.

movie-goers away who had
