December 2014 Monthly Overview For Parents

Teacher: Mr. Jones

Grade: 6

Dear Parents,
For the month of December, 2014 our grade 6 class will be studying
the following things in English Language Arts, English Social Studies,
English Science and English Math.
English
Language Arts

-Novel Study: We are nearly to the end of


The City of Ember. We will be finishing the
novel in December. We will be continuing with
chapter summary presentations, chapter
summary reports, class discussions and after
finishing the novel we will have a quiz on it.
-Reading Log: The students will be expected
to read for a minimum of 30 minutes per day
and record it in their reading log.
-Writing: The students will be expected to do
a variety of different writing activities during
December. These will include, journal writing,
essay writing and other writing
assignments/activities.
- We will be continuing with a focus on editing
and proofreading our writing throughout
December. We will also be working on how to
write a well-organized paragraph.
-Spelling/Grammar Quiz: The students will
have a grammar and spelling quiz each Friday.
Units 11-13 will be covered in the spelling text
book.
-Journal Writing: Students will continue to
write weekly journals about a variety of topics.

English Social
Studies

Investigating Cultures: We have done a lot of


research into the culture of Japan and have
presented our research to the class. Next, we will
be comparing other cultures to Canada and looking
at the differences in societies around the globe. We
will investigate the impact physical environment
has on settlement patterns and compare the art of
Canada to that of other cultures.
Vocabulary: Physical environment, landforms,
climate, relief map, climate graph, natural
resources, imports, exports, social order ,and
individual rights.

English Science

Throughout the month of December we will be


focusing on how living things adapt to their
environments in Science class.
We will be looking at both different
characteristics and behaviours of animals that
allow them to survive in their environment.
Investigation: We will look at different beak
structures of birds and how each type of beak
helps that specific bird survive. We will
demonstrate this by using household items
such as large tongs, small tongs, and pliers to
do different jobs in the lab.
Extreme Conditions: We will look at how
different animals can survive in extreme
environments on Earth.
City Life: We will look at how some animals
have adapted to be able to survive amongst
millions of humans in large cities.

English
Mathematics

Decimals: We will be continuing with decimals


in December. We will be learning about
multiplying decimals by a whole number,
dividing decimals by a whole number, dividing
decimals and focusing on different strategies to
help understand math problems.
