Topic: The Internet in Education

Introduction
The internet can be described as a public network which connects millions of computers
across the world (Reid, Dinesan & Khan, 2009). This is a network that is used worldwide by
individuals and various companies. In this modern era, the internet is vital and is used for
educational purposes by many institutions, teachers and individuals.
Use of Internet in Education
The use of internet websites and search engines such as goggle and yahoo has made research
easier for individuals. Internet tools e-learning has become very popular and accessible because
of education. The introduction of web 2.0 technology provides online learning tools which allow
students to participate in online activities more actively and to learn from colleagues (Chen,
Hwany, & Wang, 2012). Education in the traditional classroom alone has now become a thing
of the past. The internet has made higher education available and more affordable to a wide
cross section of ambitious learners. Teachers and students can communicate and collaborate
with one another through the use of instant chats, emails and other social media tools on the
Internet. Interactive websites also offer drill and practice exercises to introduce and reinforce
new or key concepts in subjects. Several examinations and assessments are also done using the

Internet and colleges and universities use it to advertise and enroll students into various courses.
According to Simon, Graziano and Lenhard (2014), the internet is now an important tool of the
learning environment especially for teenagers. Vital educational information is made available
through the use of the internet which gives individuals free access to the information needed to
choose career, pursue education and to complete assignments and research papers. .
Why I Choose This Topic?
I choose this topic because the internet seems to be something that everyone is using in
education and also for entertainment purposes. The young generation seems to be always using
internet sources for various purpose and can often be seen surfing on telephones, ipods and
tablets. Research conducted with seven hundred and fifty four youths last year November and
December indicates ninety four percent of the youths claim to have access the internet for
research and seventy eight percent believed that internet helps with school work (Simon,
Graziano and Lenhard, 2014). Hence the use of the internet in education has become something
of interest to me.
Curricular Purpose of the internet
Many classroom teachers use the internet as a means to provide information and to enhance
the delivery of lessons in curricular subject areas. The integration of ICT into the curriculum in
this way is regarded as situation learning (OTEC, n.d.). Video clippings can be downloaded and
used to aid students in better understanding curricula concepts that are taught.
Conclusion

In this modern era, the internet is vital and is used for educational purposes by many
institutions, teachers and individuals. The internet has proven to be a tool that aid teachers and
learners understanding information, getting information and delivering information.
