EDU423 C & I: Elementary Science Methods

Prepared by: Megan Stone
Lesson Title: Living and Non-living
Science Field: Life Science

Grade Level: Kindergarten

Date: May 3, 2012
Learning Objectives
Using both living and nonliving things students will be able to identify which objects are
living and nonliving.

State Standards Addressed

K-7 Standard L.OL: Develop an understanding that plants and animals have basic
requirements for maintaining life which include the need of air, water and a source of
energy. Understand that all life forms can be classified as producers, consumers, or
decomposers as they are all part of a global food chain where food/energy is supplied by
plants which need light to produce food/energy. Develop an understanding that plants
and animals can be classified by observable traits and physical characteristics.
Understand that all living organisms are composed of cells and they exhibit cell growth
and division. Understand that all plants and animals have a definite life cycle, body parts,
and a system to perform specific life functions.
State Grade Level Content Expectations Addressed
L.OL.00.12 Identify and compare living and nonliving things.

Teaching Methodology Used: Indirect teaching

Description of Instruction
1. Each student will get to reach into a box/bag and pull out either a living or nonliving
thing. The students will not be able to see what they are choosing. Once all the
students have a living or nonliving thing they will have to group themselves by
living or nonliving. After all the students think they are in the right place then we
will go over all the items and see if they are living or nonliving.
The items in the box will be:
Apple
Celery
Potatoes
Carrots
Piece of paper
String
Paint brush
Sponge
Foam
Pepper

Cucumber

2. Students will have the choice to either paint with a living or nonliving things. The
living things that they will get to choose from are potatoes, and apples. These
items will be cut up into different shapes and the students can use them as
stamps. The nonliving things that they will get to choose from are paint brushes
and sponges. There will be both living and nonliving things at each table for all the
students to use. There will be four different colors of paint: yellow, green, blue,
and red. Each color will have their own plate. Each table will have all the colors
and the students at the table will need to share. They can create any type of
design that they want and they can do up to two different paintings.
3. Bring students to the carpet and talk about the different living and non living things
that they used to paint with. Talk about what was the most fun and what looked
the coolest. Ask students how they can tell the difference between something that
is living and something that is not living. Sample answer: Living things need food.
Assessment
While students are arranging themselves in living and nonliving groups I will be watching
to see if the students are putting themselves in the correct groups. I will be using a check
list of the students to makes marks if needed.
