1 MCM means 1000 circular mils, and a circular mil is the area of a circle with
diameter 1 mil ( that is 1/1000 of one inch).
In metric terms, 1 MCM = 0.5067 sq mm

in. = 1000 mils). For example, the circular mil area of an 8 AWG solid conducto
r that has a 0.1285-in. diameter is calculated as follows:
0.1285 X 1000 = 128.5 circular mills
.1285 squared = 16,512,25
or 16,510 circular mils (rounded off)
