GETTING READY
Letter of introduction to students
Dear Students,
Welcome back to school!! I hope that you and your family had a fun and safe summer.
I am thrilled about getting to know you and making this a wonderful school year! I will be your
teacher for Physical Education, Health and Drivers education and I love each of these subjects.
However, I must admit my favorite is Drivers Education, because its an exciting time to see
students become knowledgeable and start to drive. !! If you dont already LOVE P.E. or Health ,
it is my ultimate goal to help you become passionate about both, our bodies are very important!!
I am planning a year filled with excitement, learning, and excitement about learning!!
Other than teaching, my hobbies are spending time with my family, hunting, fishing and playing
with my three dogs! I really enjoy the outdoors and hopefully this semester we can spend time
outside as part of our P.E. class !
I am looking forward to our school year together and I hope that you are as well. Its going to be
a great year!
We are going to have so much fun!!!
Sincerely, COACH PHIBBS
Letter of introduction to parents
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Hello and welcome to, you and your child, _____ grade!
My name is Steven Phibbs , and I am very excited to be your childs teacher this year! I
am very proud to be your childs teacher and am committed to doing everything within
my power to make this year successful for all of us. There is great excitement building
here at John S. Battle as the new year begins.
This is my first year at this fantastic school and I look forward to a year filled with
unlimited learning experiences and fun times. I am originally from Atlanta Georgia and
am so excited to be placed in John S. Battle High School. I earned my Bachelors Degree

in Education at Emory and Henry College. and I will continue now working on my
Masters Degree in Education at the Higher Education Center in Abingdon, Va..
Your childs grades will be based on tests, projects, homework and seatwork. Tests and
projects count for 50%, while homework, participation and seatwork count for 50%.
Should your child have an unsatisfactory test grade (D or F), the test must be
corrected and signed by a parent and returned the following school day.
Homework is assigned every day. Please be sure that your childs homework is NEAT
and COMPLETE. Homework that is given is a review of what has been taught in class.
Please take a few minutes each night to check your childs progress. If an assignment is
not completed, the student will have one additional day to turn it in to receive partial
credit. If the assignment is 2 or more days late, no credit will be given.
If your child is absent, I will post homework online to my classroom page for all to see. If
your child is absent one day, they will have one day to make it up, if they are absent for 2
days, they will have 2 days to make it up, etc. Missed tests will be given the day of their
return (unless other arrangements have been made in advance).
Behavior Policy
The following is a list of provisional rules for our classroom for the next school year. I
would greatly appreciate if you would take some time to go through these rules with your
child before he/she returns to school. I will be in contact again about this matter during
the first weeks of term with a set of the finalized rules agreed between the class and
myself.
Classroom Management Plan
Rules:
Respect one another
Raise your hand to speak during class time
Be prepared for class each day
Participation is a must, no sleeping or day dreaming
Procedures

first offence: verbal warning
second offence: student will stay after class
third offence: Contact parent

Notes.
PLEASE insure that your child arrives to school on time. It sets the tone for the entire
day. If your child is tardy, he/she will need to go to the office for a tardy slip before being
admitted to class. If the tardiness is excessive, the parent will be notified.
I want to thank you in advance for all your support. Together we will continue to work
toward success and high student achievement. I am very excited about the year ahead,
and look forward to having the privilege of teaching your child!

be properly greeted and welcomed to class.
Greet each student at the door
1.Give each student a card with his or her seating assignment on it; tell them they will also
find their names on a card at their seats.

Tell them a little about myself
Share where I am from and where I live.
Give my education and experience.
Tell them why I love teaching and why I think seventh-graders make the best students.
Entering and leaving the classroom; end-of-day dismissal

Discuss rules and consequences.

Give each student a copy of the procedures to be placed and kept in the first section of their
binder.
Discuss procedures and teach some of the most commonly used procedures.
Opening day bellringer activity
I will introduce myself and begin an ice breaker game with the students, two truths and one lie. I
will tell the students two facts about myself along with one lie. The student that answers
correctly, regarding which statement is false, will go next and repeat the same activity until the
entire class has went. The game will consist of students revealing their favorite games, activities,
sports, foods, etc. all health and p.e related. This exercise allows me as the teacher take notes
about activities, games and sports the class would be interested in doing and learning.
Getting acquainted activity
Have each student introduce themselves

Bellringer assignments
Morning/class opening procedures
Come in at 7:30 if on hall or bus duty report to duty. Classroom turn on computer to check
emails and get PowerTeacher running for class attendance and grades throughout the day. Also
to post Bellringers. Before class I print and have all material ready and if in the gym all material
out and ready.
Planning 2:20-3:20
Record in grades that still need recorded.
Make copies for worksheets, etc. for health class.

Get equipment ready for any gym activities for the day.
Power up projector for videos/powerpoints/visuals etc.
Write objectives on the board for the day.
Take notes and reflections of activities that worked or didn't
If students finish early
When assigning a test or assignment I will have always have something for the students to do.
for example When teaching drivers ed., we have modules that cover the content and for the ones
that finish test early will be given worksheets to begin on the next module in the book. To be
prepared I will always keep worksheets available in the classroom. Ensure that all students
respect others and stay quiet.
Getting the class attention
The students will enter into the locker rooms on the bell to change before class. The students will
get 5 minutes to change and I will verbalize a 4 minute warning to be out in the gym. Once
students are in the gym I will blow my whistle to signal all students to the health classroom, this
will be routine and they will know to go to the room. Once in the room students will have
developed a routine to get their notebooks out and begin the bell ringer on the board, as I take
roll.
Once I believe the students have had enough time to finish I will raise my hand and verbalize we
are ready to begin.
Quieting the class procedure
In the health classroom:
Anytime the class is too loud I will give a verbal warning; if the class doesnt quieten down after
the verbal warning I will flip the lights on and off and stand back in the front of the classroom
with one hand in the air to signal silence.
In the gym:
My whistle will signal the students quite at anytime, whether it is because they are too loud to for
additional instruction, but students will know to get quiet and listen.
Listening to/responding to questions
Students will be expected to raise their hand anytime the have a question.
hold any questions about directions and instructions until after the complete
directions/instructions have been given.
And I will direct the student.
Questions will be accepted during any point in a lecture, but students will be expected to wait
until after instructions or directions are given to ensure I am not already going to answer their
question in my original statement.
Getting the teachers attention
In the classroom setting students will be able to get my attention by raising their hand.
In the gym setting students raising their hand will be attended to, or they may approach me
directly to ask related or relevant questions.
Roll taking procedure

In the Gym: When students are finished dressing they come out and walk around the gym, this
allows me to take roll once everyone is out and time is up roll should be taken and ready for
class.
Classroom: when students enter I will take roll as i'm taking roll students should be working on
bellringer activity. For first period class I have to take roll at the beginning of class so I can send
it to attendance. With other classes however, I simply take roll by taking up bellringer activity.
Heading for all papers
Each Paper turned in should have name, date, and period or block , in the right hand corner of
paper. All heading must be neat and easy to read.
Collecting papers
During test I will walk around the class and as students finish they will raise their hand and I will
get them. This ensures no interruptions of students getting up and disturbing others.
Classroom assignments papers should be passed to the front of each row, where I will then
collect them facing down.
Tardy procedures
If a student is late to class, they will be expected to enter quietly, sit down and begin their work.
I will meet with the student when the class is dismissed to the gym to begin their fitness activity
for the day. Unexcused tardies take points off their weekly points total.
Absent student procedures
With any absences, the student will be responsible to make up any missed notes, and ask for any
worksheets theyve missed, as they will be a part of their notebook grades at the end of each
module.
Anytime a quiz or test is missed the absent student(s) work will be set aside with the individual
students names on each quiz/test. The students will be required to make the work up on their
next day back during the fitness activity/unit of the class.

Homework procedures
Students will have their homework out on their desks during the bellringer activity so I can
collect them as they work, homework can be submitted one day late, with grade penalty but will
not be accepted later than that. Absent students will be given one day after they have received the
assignment to turn in for full credit, or two days for half credit.
Teacher away from the room
In the physical education setting there is two teachers. Anytime I will have to leave the room I
will make sure it is when my class can be with the other teachers class so they are supervised.
Pencil sharpener procedures
Students will be allowed to get up and sharp pencils anytime they need to, without asking to
minimize disruptions. Pencil Sharpener will be accessible best for all students to access.

Classroom rules
Rules:
Respect one another
Raise your hand to speak during class time
Be prepared for class each day
Participation is a must, no sleeping or day dreaming
Procedures
Pick up material and be in seat when bell rings
After completion of test or quizzes each student should turn over test and teacher will take them

Classroom consequences
first offence: verbal warning
second offence: student will stay after class
third offence: Contact parent
fourth offence: Discipline by principal
Depending on severity of matter, teacher retains the right to skip these steps
Classroom rewards
Recognizing positive discipline
School Wide procedures
Get copies from office
Behavior interventions
To have all students participating and enjoying the lesson is my ultimate goal. In insists of
behavior problems the best options to begin with is to take the student to the side and talk with
them about the issues they are having. To do so without interrupting the flow of class is ideal. If
the first attempt does not change the behavior, I will having the student write a letter to the
office, which will be sent home about their actions in class. After this intervention has happened,
any behavior events that follow will result in being sent to the office.
Posting homework assignments
Homework assignments will be written on the board, corresponding with objectives. Students
will be expected to write the homework assignments down, after they have completed their bell
ringer activity. Assignments will also be posted on the online class website, which can be linked
to post emails to student/parent accounts.
First homework assignment
Have students complete a list of activities and games they love and also new games, sports,
activities they would like to learn. By having students complete these lists I will be able to tailor

my future lessons to include topics that each student will find interest in. Also this opens up the
class to more non-traditional sports that are great for students to learn about.
TEACHER MATERIALS
Organizing me
After I am familiarized with the textbook and modules, I will use the modules curriculum of
lesson plans, objectives, worksheets, quizzes, tests to organize by days and section in file
cabinets in the classroom; paper copies on file will allow easy copying to be completed when
needed. An electronic version of the same will be kept on Google Drive organized in the same
folders as the file cabinet and include powerpoints, videos, pictures and any visuals needed.
Google Drive will allow it to be sharable and available from any computer.
The P.E. equipment closet will be highly organized to maximum storage and time efficiency
when finding equipment. All equipment will have a labeled storage place.
Materials for the classroom
I will receive or obtain a Drivers education to build a curriculum from.
I will need a projector and screen, a computer with internet capabilities and a scanner and printer.
A file cabinet for paper copies of all materials.
A desk complete with extra pencils, pencils, paper, paper clips, stapler, scissors, etc.
Adequate gym supplies

Preparing for a substitute

Of course I will leave a detailed lesson plan of what to do. Daily detailed schedule. Complete
with break times and lunchroom procedures.
Locker room routines, detailed lesson plans, classroom procedures, gym procedures, student
behavior expectations, my phone number, principal and office contact information.
STUDENT MATERIALS
Organizing content of student storage
Students textbooks and notebooks will stay in the classroom on most days, under their assigned
desk, in the desk basket.
Any work turned in by students or to be handed out to students will be arranged by class in a
class folder
Organizing content of desks
Notebooks and books will be the only thing allowed in the desk undercarriage, to prevent
crowding.
SEATING
Floor plan for my classroom
All the desks will be arranged to have visibility to the whiteboard, projector. The desks will have
a good follow so I am able to move around the room. Storage for books, papers, etc will be
arranged on shelving on the wall to keep the room as organized as possible. I will have my

computer to the side of my desk to not obscure my view of my students while at my desk. My
desk will seat off to the side, but in the front of the room.
Seating assignment method
In the classroom all students need to be facing the board, overhead and myself. My desk will be
in the front of the room to keep constant watch over the students. The desk will be arranged and
far enough apart that I am able to freely move throughout the room.

Beginning seating arrangement/Class seating chart

Students will seat in alphabetical order so it is easiest for me to take role and remember names,
in the beginning. After the semester goes on the seating arrangement will change to account for
disruptive seating pairs. I will also move students around to be near students they work best with.
Class contact list
The class contact list will be an electronic document saved on my online grade report for each
class. Each students name will contain attendance, grade information, parental contact, and any
IEPs or other information that may be relevant.
Working together in groups
STUDENT MOVEMENT
Students entering the classroom procedure
When dismissed from the gym, students will quietly enter the hall and walk into the
classroom. I will be standing at the gym door to ensure orderliness when exiting the gym
and entering the classroom, which should be located relatively close to one another.
Students leaving the classroom procedure
After the drivers ed. half of the class is over, students will neatly put away any materials
they had out and wait on my cue to dismiss and they will dismiss to the gym quietly.
Moving about the room procedures
Anytime group activity involves students moving around the room, students will be directed
that anytime they are out of their seat to move location they are not allowed to talk, to avoid
a loud roar of students.
Anytime desks need moved, students are to move the desks that require the least amount
of moving and any desk moved must be returned to its original position.

Walking in the hall procedure

Students will be dismissed from the gym and must cross the hall to the health classroom,
talking and horseplay is not permitted, which also includes when the students are dismissed
back into the gym from health class.
Anytime the Physical Education portion of the class is being held outside, the students must
stay in the order the leave the room in, by row, all the way through the hall to the outside
doors.

Talking in the hall in a deduction of their daily grade.

Bathroom use procedures

Disaster drill procedures
Procedures will be posted on the wall by the door of the classroom, including a map of the
school and location points.
Student sudden illness
I will immediately call the nurse and tend to the student until they arrive.
I will clear other students from the student that is ill and clear any hazards that could be
potentially harmful to the student.

End of day dismissal procedures

At the end of each class the students will have to go back to the locker room and change their
clothes back and get their stuff from their lockers.
Students will be given 7 minutes to clear equipment in the gym or outside areas they used for the
day, return it to its respected place in the equipment closet and go to the locker room to change.
After the students have changed they will wait in the gym for the bell.
