Lesson Plan Format

Lesson Title: Retelling a story
Grade Level: 9th grade
Date(s): May 1-May 7
SOE Course: YAL

Standard(s) and Objective(s) Standard(s)

Objective(s) Suggestions:

Unit goal: Students will be able to analyze the differences point of view has on a story. I will
expect them to write a paper telling how their story differs and how the audiences view
differs.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy. RL.9-10.6 Assess how point of view or purpose shapes the content and
style through a text.
Lesson Objective: Students will be able to make their own form of graphic timeline re-telling
at least three main areas of The Fault in Our Stars. (Ex: Hazel meeting Gus, Hazel walking
up the stair in Anne Franks house, and Hazels feelings when Gus died.) It will have to be
from another character of the students choices point of view.
II.

Assessment
Pre-assessment (before planning lesson)

Pre-Assessment-I will need to look at students work and make sure it is fully understood
how to tell which characters point of view the story is in. I will also need to give some sort
of overview of what point of view is in a text.
Formative assessment- I will be able to determine if the students have achieved the objective
by looking at their own form of graphic timeline. While the students are doing this
assignment I will walk around the class while the students are illustrating their graphics and

make sure the students are fully understanding the concept of point of view. As an exit slip I
am going to ask the students to write down the three main areas that will be changed in their
retelling.
Summative assessment- As a summative assessment I will have my students write an essay
explaining why the different points of view in a story add suspense to the reader and how
their three main ideas effect the reader.

III.

Planning

For this class I will have two different youtube vides showing the roller-coaster Batman in
Six Flags, one video will have the viewpoint of the front row and the other video will show
the last row. This will emphasize the differences in point of view. I will also have an exit slip
for the students to fill out that explains to me what three events he or she is planning to retell.
I will need to review and ensure 504 and IEPs to make sure their needs are being met.
IV. Engaging the LearnerIn order to engage the learner I will play the two youtube videos at the beginning of class describing the
different points of view. Then, I will ask the students questions such as How important is it to consider
point of view when looking at a story?
V.

Methods, Activities and Resources

MethodsThis lesson will be both lecture and individual work, however, students may turn and talk if preferred.
While walking around the room, I will be asking individual students what three event he or she has
chosen to re-tell in a different point of view and why.

ActivitiesThe students will be engaged in class discussion by giving me examples of different characters that
can be used for this assignment. Also, I will expect students to be able to give me examples of events
that could be told in a different point of view.

VI.
Potential Adaptations to the
Lesson {PAL}
If technology fails I will have the information handwritten in my notebook to write on the
board.
I will also have to get with the teacher that specializes with the IEP and 504 students. I will
have a differentiated lesson for these students with either less complex sentences or more
complex sentences depending on the IEP.

VII.

Collaboration

I would feel the need to involve the parents if I had a student that was not grasping the
sentence concept or if a student was defiant in class. Or if I had a student with an IEP or 504
I may need to talk to the parents to see if they have any ideas that will help their child
become more successful in the classroom. Then I could communicate the outcome of my
students work with his/her parents either via email, phone conference or in person conference
I will also need to keep in close contact with the SPED teacher to ensure that every need of
the student is met.
