Lander University Lesson Plan

Teacher Candidate: Morgan Chambers

Subject/Grade: Kindergarten/Math

Lesson # ___5___
Date and Time of Lesson: 11/20/14 8:00 A.M.

Learning Objective: The students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of these shapes: square, circle,
and triangle.
Alignment with Standards:
Common Core Math: K.G.A.1- Describe objects in the environment using names of shapes and describe the
relative positions of these objects using terms such as above, below, beside, in front of, behind, and next to.
Developmental Appropriateness or Cross-curricular connections:
Emotional- The students will have the opportunity to work one on one with the teacher without the involvement of other
students.

Cognitive- The students will need to have the ability to concentrate on the teachers demonstration of the lesson,
and to differentiate between positional words.
Social- Students will have the ability to work by themselves, as well as one-on-one with the teacher.
Physical- The students will be working hands on with the materials throughout the lesson, and by doing so will
be subconsciously working on their fine motor skills.
Assessment(s) of the Objectives:
Lesson Objective

Assessment of the Objective

Use of Formative
Assessment

The students will be able to

begin to identify shapes.

Using the presentation tray,

students will be introduced to
the shapes and given the
name for each shape. During
this time the student will
repeat the process shown by
the teacher and will trace the
outline of each shape and
name it. After the students
will be given a 3 period
lesson to assess their
understanding of the lesson.
After the 3 period lesson, the
students will trace and label
the shapes in their math
notebooks.

Data received from this

activity will help to guide
the direction needed for
further instruction.

K.G.A.1

Accommodations: This is a lesson that is taught individually and at the students pace. Accommodations will
vary based on the needs of the student being taught at that time. Since the lesson will be done one on one with
the teacher and student any modifications that that student may need will be addressed then.
Materials:
mat
geometric cabinet presentation tray

pencils
math notebook

Procedures:
Motivation techniques- To gain the interest of the student, he will be given the opportunity to work one
on one with the teacher during work time and be shown a new lesson.
Grouping- This lesson will be taught on an individual basis to students, while other students work on other

Montessori shelf lessons during work time. Though taught individually, this lesson can be done in small groups as
well.

Instructional strategies- 1. Once the student has found a work space for his mat, he will be shown where
the lesson is located on the shelf and how to carry it properly to his mat. 2. The student will be shown
how to take the shapes out of the tray and trace the outlines one by one and name them. (i.e. pick up
square with pincer grasp, trace outline while naming shape and lay the square down on the mat beside
the tray) 3. The student will be shown this process and how to put the shapes back into the tray. 4. Then
the student will repeat the same process that was shown by the teacher. 5. Once the student has
completed this, they will be given a 3 period lesson if ready. 6. To close the lesson, after the three period
lesson the student will trace and label the shapes in his math notebook.
Probing questions- What is this? Show me the triangle. Place the square above the circle."
Lesson closure- Once the student has finished the lesson; he will be able to get his math notebook and
trace the shapes into his notebook and label them.

Activity Analysis:

Activity 1- During this part of the lesson the student will be shown the shapes and how to trace the
outline of the shapes with his fingers. Once he has been shown how to do this, he will then repeat the
process on his own. This activity stems from the lesson objective because he will be introduced to the
different shapes and their names. This activity is based off the students need to have an understanding
of the shapes because it is a state standard. This activity is also based off of the students characteristics
because it allows the student to work one on one with the teacher. During this activity technology will
not be used because the student will be working hands on with the Montessori materials, thus the use of
technology is not needed.
Activity 2- During this part of the lesson, the student will be given a 3 period lesson, in which the
teacher will assess their comprehension of the shapes. This activity supports the lesson objective
because it allows the teacher it see how the student is progressing with his knowledge of the shapes
while aligning with the state standard which states that the student should be able to describe the relative
positions between shapes. This activity stems from the students characteristics because it allows him to
move the shapes around kinesthetically and use his understanding of positional words. This activity also
stems from the students need to work one on one with the teacher as well. During this activity,
technology will not be used because the student will be working hands on with the Montessori materials
moving them around, thus the use of technology is not needed.
