Standard K-4: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the way families live and work together today
as well as in the past.

Thanksgiving and pilgrims are something the class has previously discussed. Thanksgiving has been explained
to them as a time to give thanks and this is important for all students to know. They have prior knowledge on

Objective(s)

Use of Formative
Assessment

Students will be able to

correctly identify the
differences between then
and now using a chart and
pictures. Students will also
be able to relate their lives
to the book read during the
pre-assessment.

Students will be assessed

three times during this
lesson.
Pre: Whole group
assessment- I will read the
book, Pilgrim Children
Have Many Chores by Gina
Lem-Tardif, aloud to the
class. After the read aloud I
will ask students questions
about the differences from
then and now.
During: Students will be
expected to be actively
engaged and fully participate
throughout the lesson. I will
assess students based on if
they place the correct picture
in the correct category.
Post: Students will be given
a sheet that says, Pilgrim
children had many chores. I
can do chores too! They
will be asked to write a
sentence about what chores
they can do and draw a

If students are not able

to correctly place the
pictures in the
categories, I will work
with these students
during guided reading
time. If students are
unable to write a
sentence during the post
assessment, I will assist
them in writing their
sentence during guided
reading time as well.
Also, I will see which
letters or words are
giving them trouble and
work with them on
those words throughout
my remaining time in
the class.

picture. Students will color

their pictures and be assessed
based on the correctness of
their sentence.
Accommodations:
For the student who is ADHD, I will have to make sure he is on task during instruction by periodically asking
him questions. During activity time I will walk by his seat and be sure he is staying focused on the activity. For
my student who is who is an English language learning, I will give him one on one help when the students begin
their independent practice. For my students with autism and Aspergers, I will give a short summary of what we
will be doing sure our lesson, a detailed explanation and finish with a summary of the lesson so that each one
knows what to expect.
Materials:

Pilgrim Children Have Many Chores by Gina Lem-Tardif big book
Smart Board
iPad stand/camera
Name Popsicle stick
Procedures:
1. I will ask the students if they can tell me a couple facts about pilgrims they have talked about.
2. I will say, Today we are going to do things a little differently. We are going to do a whole class lesson
before guided reading. We are going to read a story about pilgrims and the chores they had to do back in
their day.
3. I will ask the class Who can tell me what a chore is?
4. I will introduce the book and choose students names out of the can to come and show me different
concepts of print.
5. After they have showed me some of the concepts of print, I will read the book aloud.
6. After the read aloud I will choose names out the can to ask different questions about the story, such as,
what is a chore the pilgrims had to do? Do we have to do chore like this?
7. I will then explain to the class what the past is and what the present is.
8. After we discuss the difference in past and present, I will ask students to go get their crayon bags and go
back to their seats row by row.
9. The students will already have all the materials they need for this activity at their desk.
10. We will talk about each picture on the sheet they are going to cut out.
11. I will ask the students to cut out each square and place them in the column they think it goes in.
12. Mrs. Will and I will walk around assisting students as needed.
13. Once we have ensured the students have correctly placed the squares we will instruct them to glue them
and color while their classmates are finishing.
14. If the class gets out of control and talkative, I will say Class, Class! and they will respond, Yes!
Yes! I will redirect them to their assignment.
15. Once each student is done gluing the squared down I will put the worksheet under the camera and show
it on the Smart Board and ask students to help me complete my chart.
16. After they have finished this I will ask them to put all the materials away except their crayon bags.
17. I will ask the students again what kind of chores did the pilgrims have to do back in their time.

18. I will ask the students to give me some examples of some chores they may be responsible for at their
house.
19. I will pass out the post assessment worksheet and give the students instructions on what they are to do.
As the students are working I will walk around the classroom assisting the students who need help
writing their sentence.
20. Once students are finished with this assignment I will ask students to clean up their area and return to
the rug so Mrs. Armstrong can tell them what they are going to do next.
Activity Analysis:
Activity 1: Students will complete a interactive worksheet. This worksheet requires students to cut and glue the
correct square in the then or now column. This allows students fine motor skill practice and color. It also allows
students to understand what was different in the past that they may not be aware of. This is will done as a whole
class lesson because it will allow students to consult with their teachers and classmates on what they predicted.
Activity 2: I will show a picture a blank Then and Now worksheet on the Smart Board and allow students to
come up and help me place them in the correct column after they have completed theirs. This is gives students
extra practice and help the students who did not get theirs correct a chance to fix it.
Activity 3: Students will complete a sheet that allows them to think, write, and draw an example of a chore that
they can do. This activity allows the students to notice the difference in their chores and the chores the pilgrims
did in the past. This is a great extension for a simple read aloud.
