2. The coordinates for the points that mark the locations of the grocery store and the post office can be
found by translating Main Street vertically 15 units down. The grocery store is located directly south of
the town hall.
a. What are the coordinates of the points that mark the location of the grocery store and
the post office? Explain how you determined your answers. Then, plot the points on the
coordinate plane.

Grocery Store: (1, 22)

Post Office: (211, 4)

vertical translation changes the y-coordinate, but the x-coordinate stays the same. So, I
A
know that the x-coordinate for the point that gives the location of the grocery store is the same
as the x-coordinate for the point that gives the location of the town hall. I subtracted 15 from
13 to determine the y-coordinate of the grocery store. Further, I know that the x-coordinate
for the point that gives the location of the post office is the same as the x-coordinate for the
point that gives the location of the library. I subtracted 15 from 19 to determine the y-coordinate
of the post office.

b. What must be true about the road between the post office and grocery store and Main Street?
Explain how you determined your answer. Then, use mathematics to verify your answer.
he road between the post office and the grocery store and Main Street must be the same length
T
because I translated Main Street down 15 units to form the road between the post office and the
grocery store. I can use the distance formula to verify that the roads are the same length.

The length of both streets is approximately 13.4 units. So, I know they are the same length.

3. The town would like to construct a park that is one mile from the town hall. Use your compass to show
all possible locations for the new park. Explain how you determined your answer.

I opened my compass to a distance of 6 units, because this represents a distance of one mile. I placed
the point of the compass on the point representing the town hall and then constructed a circle around
town hall showing all possible park locations that would be one mile from the town hall.

a. How many translations are needed? Explain your reasoning.

wo translations are needed to translate /JKL to Quadrant III. A horizontal translation to the left
T
will translate the angle to Quadrant II, so an additional vertical translation down will be needed
to translate the angle to Quadrant III.

Note: Students may choose to translate vertically and then horizontally.

12

b. Describe the translations that are needed.

The angle must be translated 13 units horizontally to the left and 11 units vertically down.

c. Determine what the coordinates will be for points J9, K9, and L9 before translating the angle.
Explain how you determined your answers.

J9(210, 28), K9(23, 22), L9(23, 210)

I started with the coordinates for J, K, and L. I subtracted 13 from the x-coordinates, because the
angle must be translated 13 units horizontally to the left. I subtracted 11 from the y-coordinates,
because the angle must be translated 11 units vertically down.

d. Verify your answers to part (c) by translating /JKL to Quadrant III.

See graph.

2. Perform the construction(s) needed to duplicate /JKL to create /J9K9L9.

Answers may vary.

I used a ruler to draw a starter ray and labeled the endpoint K9. Then I constructed an arc
with center K that passed through both sides of /K. Using the same radius, I drew another
arc with center K9 that passed through the starter ray. I Iabeled the points where the arc
intersected /K as points J and L and the point where the arc intersected the starter ray as L9.
Then I drew an arc with radius JL and center L9 that intersected the arc which passes
through the starter ray. I labeled the intersection of these two arcs point J9. Finally I drew
ray K9J9. /J9K9L9 is congruent to /JKL.

12

b. Duplicate /JKL using construction.
