Puerto Rico
In English class our student body has begun introducing to the following
reading the meaning of Consuelo. When reading the novel you can conclude
there are many similarities in the text. Now it is possible to go anywhere on the
island in a day-it is a mere thirty-five by one hundred miles in area-but in those
days. (20). the family in the novel is so much like families in Puerto Rico now in
modern days. Consuelo explains more about her life to the reader which she gives
details about her family also why they had to move from their home in Puerto
Rico. The Signe family was blessed with two daughters Consuelo, which she is the
oldest and the youngest daughter Mili. During the time frame in Puerto Rico
couldnt do as they please because there was so much destruction and rebuilding
that need to be put down.
During the years Puerto Rico religion change and when it begun to change
there were two main religions such as Roman Catholic faith and Protestant. The
various Protestant were introduced to the island when American started taking
control of Puerto Rico, but during the years when the Spanish were in control the
religion was censored. Over the years the Roman Catholic religion has proved the
most popular form of religion for many Puerto Ricans. The other religions
represented in Puerto Rico all have churches or places of worship to go

throughout the island. The Constitution guaranteed freedom for all faiths. The
major religions are Catholic (85%), Protestants (8%), non-religious (2.3%), and
others (3%).
Although Puerto Rico cooking is somewhat similar to Spanish, Cuban, and
Mexican cuisine, it is a unique tasty blend of Spanish, African, Taino, and
American. In Puerto Rico lunch and dinner began with sizzling-hot appetizers such
as bacalaitos, crunchy cod fritters, surullitos, sweet plump commeal fingers; and
empanadillas which is crescent-shaped turnovers filled with lobster, crab, conch,
or beef. Their desserts usually include some form of flan (custard) or perhaps
nisperos de batata (sweet potato balls with coconut, cloves and cinnamon. Puerto
Ricans make a number of preserves and jellies. They each have all kinds of drinks
such as Puerto Rican coffee, cold beer, and rum which is the national drink.
Puerto Rico has all kinds of sports such as Baseball, basketball, biking, and
skating. Sports in Puerto Rico can be traced from the pre-Columbian Native
Americans. One of the sports which the Tainos played was a ball game called
Batey. The game Batey was played in U shaped fields two teams however unlike
the ball games of the modern era; the winners were treated like heroes and the
losers were scarified. Puerto Rico participates in the Olympics since 1948 as an
independent nation. The Tainos who inhabited Puerto Rico before the arrived of
Christopher Columbus in 1492, which were both Ceremonial and diversional.
A Puerto Rican is a person who was born in Puerto Rico. Puerto Ricans
commonly refer to the themselves as boruiouas. The majority of Puerto Ricans
regard themselves as being of mixed Spanish-European descent. Puerto Ricans
are in places such as New York, Florida, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania, with larger

populations in Massachusetts, Connecticut, California, Illinois, and Texas. The


original inhabitants of Puerto Rico are the Taino, who called the island Boriken;
however, as in other parts of the Americans, the native people soon diminished in
number after the arrival of European settlers.
