    HELICOPTER THEORY HW 2

    Due date: 26 November 2012, before 14:00


    Please answer following 3 questions:
    1. Give an overview of the main technological problems that were encountered when trying to
    design and fly a successful helicopter prior to 1900. Give a successful example rotorcraft of the
    present day. Itemize its state of the art features.
    2. For a truly heavy lift helicopter, e.g. in excess of 1 000 000 N gross takeoff weight, would a single
    rotor design be considered practical? Why?

    3. So-called compound helicopter designs have enjoyed periodic popularity over the years. Explain
    what is meant by a compound helicopter? What is wing compounding and thrust compounding?
    Give an example of a compound helicopter.
