MEMO
________________________________________________________________________
Since this is an open house we do not envision it having a specific order of events. We
plan to have 9 of the rounds tables in the room set with information. We plan to have a
trifold made on each of the four emphases, internships, and also study abroad options.
Each trifold will cover what the area entails, ranging salaries, and potential jobs. The
study abroad board will have information on destinations, scholarships, costs, and photos
from previous trips. There will be an HTM student table with a trifold of the HTM
professors and the work they have accomplished in their fields. At this table there will
also be a number of laptops for students to go on and like HTM Facebook page
(explained later). There will also be a table featuring the HTM clubs. Also a table focused
on the adventure tourism minor that is offered. This table will have an adventure tourism
faculty member present. There will also be a pile of gear (scuba, cowboy boots, harnesses,
hats). Finally, the internship board would have information on how many are required
for the major, link of where to find internships, and photos from others internships
experiences.
Right when the student walks through the door they will be welcomed and handed a
scavenger hunt sheet. With this activity we hope to draw the students around to all the
different tables by motivating them with prizes. Below I will give and explain a number
on the scavenger hunt how we plan to creatively get the students involved and interested
in all of our tables.
1. Visit the HTM student table and like us on Facebook.
This is just how it sounds we will have laptops available for students to login and like us
on Facebook. There will be student workers there with fall themed stamps and they will
stamp the sheet showing that the student had accomplished #1.
2. List two countries that are HTM focused where you can study abroad.
The study abroad trifold will have a lot of information and photos; however, a main
component will be a large map of all the countries in the world. The countries that are
available for study abroad opportunities will be colored in. Students will be provided with
fall themed stickers and will be able to mark their #1 country that they would want to
visit.
3. (For adventure tourism) You are an adventurer! Visit our adventure tourism table
and take a picture with gear in front of the HTM banner. Tag it to a social media
site with #GVSUHTM

We will have this table up against the wall with the GVSU banner behind it. There will
be a stack of gear that adventure tourists would use (backpack, ski gear, snowboard,
scuba, cowboy boots, etc.) They will then post it on a social media site with our hashtag.
This will up our online presence; however, it will also appear on the individuals
timelines and would then attract their friends as well.
4. How many internships do you need to graduate?
There will be students at this table with personal experiences in an HTM focuses
internships. This will provide students with personal stories on what students took away
from their internships.
5. What job can you pursue with a tourism emphasis?
For this table we plan to have the pumpkin board posted below. Each face of the cups
will have Tourism Careers on it. The individual will poke the tissue and inside will be a
piece of paper with a potential career on it. We will have two boards, one in the shape of
a pumpkin (as can be seen below) and one in the shape of a leaf to coincide with our fall
theme. The budget that was picked for the event allotted us $115 for theming and $50 for
contingency. We hope to be able to fit 1 more poster board into our decorations budget,
tissue paper under decorations or contingency, if needed, and either use extra cups from
the decorations budget or use a little from the contingency money that was left. We
would like to use 22 cups for the pumpkin game, which would mean we would spend $2
for 24 cups and maximum $19 on 400 ct. tissue paper so that every student should be able
to play the game.
The information on potential careers will also be included on the board; however, this
will get students physically involved in learning more about this emphasis. We chose this
emphasis because we feel that it is often difficult to decide potential careers for a tourism
emphasis.
6. Name a unique hotel pictured at the lodging table.
This table will have images on the trifold of unique hotels or resorts from around the
world. These images were chosen because they will draw students to the table. Who
would not be drawn to a picture of a hotel made entirely of ice?

Hotel in Dubi, Jumeirah Dhevanafushi, located on a remote island out in the

middle of the Indian Ocean

Hotel of Ice in Balea Lac, Romania, this hotel is built on top of a frozen glacial
lake.

Hotel Kakslauttanen Igloo Village, located in Saariselka Finnland, offers snow

and glass igloos for guests.

7. How many HTM focused clubs are there?

We will have information on all the different clubs focused on HTM. We will also have
photos and information on activities and trips that the clubs are involved in; also the
benefits of being in these clubs.
8. Whats a current trend in food and beverage?

Our table will cover the aspect of food and beverage around the world with images of
exotic foods that will draw the students in. There will also be a section on trends in food
and beverage; such as, farm-to-table, craft brew, and gluten free.

9. What events do HTM students organize on campus?

We will have information provided on our event tables on what events they can get
involved in planning. We will also have pictures provided and let them know all the
different types of events there are. We hope to highlight to students the personal
experience they will get in their major with this emphasis.
10. Extra point if all correct!

The students will have their paper checked on the way out of the event. If students
complete at least 7 of these they will receive a bag full of small prizes; if the student has
completed all 10 their name will be put in a drawing. Depending on how many bigger
prizes we get, we will draw that number of students names. We will then find the student
on the HTM page (since they will have liked it) and write them to let them know that
their prize is waiting for them in the HTM.
This is beneficial for two reasons:
1. They do not have to wait around at the event in order to win
2. They will know where the HTM department is and will hopefully pass faculty
in or on their way to the office
Then of course we will also have the food and beverage on the long counter to the left
when you walk in the door. We will have individuals from our class working at the food,
welcoming at the door, and working at the different tables. We hope that our guests will
help themselves to food, eat at the tables, visit the tables, and enjoy their scavenger hunt.
The individuals from our class will be there for questions and to go around and converse
with the guests.

FALL into the hunt!
