Chapter 1 Reflection

Prior to reading chapter 1 I had already knew about how important technology was in our
classrooms. When I was growing up in elementary school we had something called a "over-head
projector" instead of a "smart board" and I am only 20 years old so that can tell you how rapid
technology is rising. I knew that in the classrooms teachers were starting to use different
technology devices for introducing lessons, using iPad for educational apps, and also helping
with more creative learning. Somethings while reading chapter one that I found interesting was
that they are going to have a new NETS requirement for rising teachers so that they can
introduce more technology in the classroom. Teachers will have to attend workshops to enforce
and make known of new technology in the classrooms. They are also going to start using more
electronic devices to take the place of pencil and paper, and also for checking attendance. With
these ideas I would try to make sure my students understand how important technology is and
how it has grown over time. The kids wouldnt be completely dependent on technology but just
enough of knowledge that it is integrated in the classroom.
Chapter 2 Reflection
Prior to reading this chapter, I had already knew the three different types of learning
people could had. Such as visual, learning better through pictures and images, then you have
auditory which is when a person learns their best through listening, and finally you have
kinesthetic which is someone who learns better through hands on experiences. I knew this prior
because of my previous psychology classes. Everyone learns in a different way, thats why I
believe teachers have to integrate all three sides of learning in their classrooms. I learned in this
chapter to understand your students, you must understand the different ways of learning and how
to cope with each students way. For example I read about Technology to Address Diversity,
this means that each child will have the opportunity to learn in their best way. Auditory learners
will be able to access academic software and computer based lessons by their teachers. Visual
learners will learn by the content and presentations of the computer screen. And kinesthetic
learners will be able to interact with the computer and its software. Therefore technology can
assist the diverse learning in a classroom better than one teacher by herself could. What I would
take from this chapter into the classroom is just to make every student feel like their learning
experience is just as important as the next. I would keep in mind that everyone learns different so
try and engage each type of learning with technologies help.
Chapter 3 Reflection
Prior to reading this chapter I knew just how important it was for teachers to plan ahead. With
technology taking such a big step for us in classrooms it is important that teachers use it when
planning their lessons. They should also do a trial and error process before taking their lessons
into the classrooms to teach students with. With kids there are many ways their attention span
can be distracted so therefore it is important that the teachers lesson in engaging enough for each
and every student. What I didn't know in this chapter and what I found most interesting was the
Pedagogical Cycle. This cycle has 8 steps involved in helping teachers display good work ethics
and tactics to their students. These steps include providing a reorganizer, use motivators, build
bridges to prior knowledge, share objectives, introduce new knowledge, reinforce knowledge,

provide practice experiences, and culminating review. I like this cycle because it opens up to
each students way of learning without leaving anyone out. It also gives the teacher a way to plan
easier and more effectively. Taking the information from this chapter I would learn to plan out
my lessons easy and effective. I would make sure I am reaching every students needs and I
would make sure my lessons plan flowed so that everyone would understand them. While putting
my lesson plans together I would also include the Pedagogical Cycle because it is an easy way to
reinforce steps you may have missed when trying to appeal to each students learning style.
Chapter 4 Reflection
Prior to reading this chapter I knew some of the basic things, such as kids with disabilities
can benefit from useful technology. Technology can provide more independence
for these students without making them feel so helpless. Technology like
wheelchairs which help kids move around easier, and it can also be a voice for
kids who struggle with motor skills. Growing up around a kid of special needs Ive
seen first-hand just how impacting technology can be. One of the things that caught my eye
while reading was the culturally and linguistically diverse students and how they face challenges.
They are called English language learning (ELL). A program came up with by teachers have
made it possible for these students to feel technology advanced. With technology it
offers all levels of language remediation at a simplified pace. It helps culturally
diverse students become familiar with alternative cultures more effectively.
Students like these can function at grade level but often have a hard time with
language. They are often placed in classes with students and teachers who do
not know how to help these types of kids adjust to learning English. With
technology in place it will give a chance for ELL students to feel comfortable
in classroom settings. Another thing that I didnt realize was the different
styles of keyboards that were available for students with disabilities. There
are expanded keyboards which have larger keys for keystrokes, mini-keyboards
that help kids who have motion restrictions in their arms, one handed
keyboards, customizable keyboards to assist an individuals needs, and on
screen keyboards which help students who are only able to use a mouse. What I am taking from
this chapter is that disabilities, whether it being handicap or
having a different first language, technology can be of assistance to make
things less complicated for the student and for the teacher. I will take all of
these considerations into the classroom when I am faced with these types of
challenges in my classroom.
Chapter 5 Reflection
In chapter five there were a few things I had already had a grasp on. Some of those things
included knowing that teachers must have more than common knowledge to work a classroom
computer. As it states on the first page However, comfort using a computer for personal task
and a professional level of computer literacy are different. This implies that it takes more than
knowing how to check your email, or do a PowerPoint. Other things that I already knew in this
chapter was the hardware of a computer. Before transferring to NCCU, in my last semester I
completed an intro to computer class that helped me figure out everything on our daily

computers. Things such as what input and output is, memory (RAM), and software programs that
tell the computer how to function. These things I had already had a good idea about before
reading it in chapter 5. There was a vast amount of information that I didnt know while reading
on in this chapter. How networking connects technologies across schools. Networks are basically
the essential that carries the computing power across campus. This
then connects to a powerful, single computer called a server. Network workstations are set in
place to use network management software, common files, user files, and programs. Networks
make it possible to provide communication throughout your school, whether you are sending an
email in your district or to a different location. Another thing that stood out to me was the
monitoring of student activity in the classrooms. In high school when we would get assigned
computers we always had some students who would get away with visiting sites because the
teacher had no way of knowing unless she walked around the classroom. Now, some networks
offer teachers a way to monitor activity and take control of student workstation
at any given time. Another plus is that a teacher can pull up more than one childs workstation to
provide a demonstration or instruction if needed. Some ways I would use these things in my
teaching job would be to make sure I could work more than the basic computer skills. Because of
the age group of kids I plan to work with, their level of knowing the ins and outs of a computer
will be very slim to none. If I can broaden my knowledge of computers then that can help me
broaden theirs, so when they do get to the age of being technology advanced that wont be so far
behind. Another way I would use this information is by using the monitoring system as a plus,
such as seeing how trustworthy my kids would be to work on their own time with the computers.
Every 15 minutes I would check their workstations just to make sure they were staying on task. I
learned a lot in this chapter that I can take with me into my future classroom.
Chapter 6 Reflection
After viewing this chapter somethings that I already knew about and how to use were the
computer peripheral technologies that are in classrooms today. Such as scanners, graphic tablets,
touch screens, electronic whiteboards, data projectors, standalone technologies and so on. These
devices I am very familiar with because I interact with them almost every day. My professors use
electronic whiteboards now to present topics in class, and I read this chapter from a graphic
tablet because I have an eBook. I am aware that devices like the ones talked about in this chapter
are becoming very useful in an educational setting. What I have learned from this chapter is how
technology can act as opportunities in a classroom and how they can act as challenges. Some of
the opportunities it gives students is it provides interactivity, and engages students to get active
with their learning. Adding just a touch of technology to a presentation can get the minds of your
students engaged with whats going on. Delivering content by via technology will help students
overcome their lack of interest and help the participation of the classroom. Another way
technology can be used as an opportunity is that it helps teachers assist the diversity of the
classroom. Since it can be difficult for a teacher to feel like they are reaching the minds of each
student, technology offers an easier way to help address different learning and cognitive styles,
cultural and linguistic backgrounds, and special needs. Although technology can offer great
opportunities, it also comes with great challenges. Such as knowing what type of technology is
best for your students, since there are so many competing brands it is best to go by a rubric of
what you need. Once you have selected what technology piece is best, a teacher must master the
skill of it. This means making the time for teachers to attend workshops and engaging in in

service training cut into the planning time. Cost to offer these practices in terms of time and
resources could also be a challenge of technology. There are plenty of things I can take from this
chapter with me into my classroom. These devices that we are starting to get ahold of will only
continue to grow as time moves on. I feel as though when I enter the teaching world I will know
a lot because I will have started with these devices from the beginning. These tools are placed in
classrooms so that it makes the job on educators easier and so that students will start to be more
interested in learning with technology. I will also remember the opportunities and challenges that
it will bring when I am faced with either.
Chapter 7 Reflection
Some of the things I already knew in chapter 7 were the online Microsoft office tutorials. These
type of tutorials help people become familiar with the software that Microsoft has to offer. I was
also familiar with the word processing since I have used it for much of my life. This software has
replaced typewriters for text-oriented task, but todays word processors can be used for much
more than just typing. It can be used for desktop publishing, creating and editing graphics,
providing reviews and reference tools, and developing web pages. Other things I knew were
presentation software, it helps to organize and enhance information. It can be used for teacher led
presentations or for student led class reports. While I knew some of the information in this
chapter beforehand, there was still a lot of information that was new. Such as classroom
management software, which assist educators in accomplishing the many task associated with
the day to day management of their classrooms or their schools. Some examples are keeping an
alphabetized grade roll, taking attendance, or creating an updated seating chart. This data can
also be used for entering and tracking student data. Web enhanced district-wide management
software can makes students grades accessible to parents by a simple password. To use these
type of softwares educators must attend training sessions to make sure they can use it to the full
capabilities. Another thing that I read about is the online tools. Google has offered a collection of
productivity applications known as Google Apps. An online software application that is used for
creating and sharing documents. Google docs is one of the most used apps in education. It
enables educators to create, save, edit, and work on word processing documents. These software
and files are saved online so teachers can have all their files whether they are at home or in the
classroom, as long as they have internet access. The information that I have learned in this
chapter will be taken with me into my future classroom. I will make sure I know the steps to
word processing so that my students will be able to understand. I think the classroom
management software will be most helpful because it can be used for a lot of things. Most
parents want to know how their children are doing in the classroom at all times, as a teacher it
just wouldn't be realistic for me to call every parent each night and tell them their childs grade.
With classroom management software I can let the parents set up an account at the beginning of
the semester with a password that holds all their childs grades throughout the year. This way it
takes stress off of the parents and off of me to keep they informed. Google docs could help me as
a teacher in the classroom if there are documents that I need to pull up I can do it with the
internet, instead of only having it on one computer. I liked this chapter a lot because it gave me
many ideas to take into consideration when I become an educator.

Chapter 8 Reflection
Prior to reading this chapter there were somethings I had already knew about. Such as
application software for active learning, programs such as word processing which can be used to
demonstrate real-time essay editing, grammatical structure, and teaches outlining skills. Another
program is spreadsheets which can teach graphing, operations of equations. And database can
help students organize and order data, and do ascending and descending sorts. I knew about these
application softwares because I have had hands on experience with each of them. They are a
way to make education and technology two in one with a different way of learning. Other
software that I was unaware of was the graphics software for active learning. This type of
software enable the graphics to become 3D and enhance static images by creating, editing, and
animating them. Illustration and draw programs give image libraries to offer the teacher and
students many resources to help them create their own illusions. The illustration program creates
graphics using virtual versions of artist tools such as pens and brushes. And the draw program
creates graphics by arranging lines and shapes. Another type of software that is new to me is the
Reference software, this provides digital versions of resources once only found in volumes of
books. Reference software can range from dictionaries and encyclopedias. This has taken the
atlas to a whole new level, one example of a reference tool is Google Earth. Using this software
students can virtually fly to anywhere in the world and see 3D satellite images. An extension of
Google Earth is called Google Sky, which helps with 3D and animated tours of space and
planets. What I can take from this chapter into the classroom is using all of this software in a fun
and educational manner. If I want my students to use Google Earth to learn their addresses and to
be able to show and locate their own houses for me. Using the illustration and drawing software
could be used for them in group projects to have a different way to introduce material. All of the
programs covered in chapter 8 could be influenced in the classroom.
Chapter 9 Reflection
Prior to reading this chapter some of the information that I had already had a general knowledge
about was the internet and the World Wide Web. I understood how it was connected throughout
schools usually through a district network. I also knew that teachers use the internet for many
reasons, such as email it allows you to send and receive electronic messages with or without
attachments. Another thing is discussion boards, which is what I am using to type this right now.
I have used emails and discussion boards since I started college so my knowledge of how it
works is useful. Some of the things I didn't know was how the World Wide Web had evolved,
Web 1.0 changed the look of the internet from a text-based presentation of hard to reach data,
into a point and click interface to hyperlinked information. Then Web 2.0 came along and
emphasized communication, collaboration, and sharing, which makes this todays social web.
Web 2.0 is what put a jump start onto social media, it went beyond one-to-one emails and
discussion groups, to thing such as Facebook, Twitter, etc. Another thing used by teachers is
called academic portals, which is a doorway to a collection of the worlds many resources.
Educational portals such as Educational World are dedicated to educational topics and services
but because they are privately funded they also include a lot of ads. It is important that teachers
view these portals before using them in classrooms. A second online resource is called RSS feed,
which stands for really simple syndication. It refers to the news or other important topics that are
automatically renewed via the web. I would use some of this information in my classroom by

introducing emails and discussion boards to my students. By emails I would have my students
send three emails every week so they can get familiar with it prior to college. Discussion boards
will be used in the same way that my teachers have let me use it, by discussing assignments and
posting responses. I would use academic portals to research information in my classes and for
my lesson planning.
Chapter 10 Reflection
Prior to reading this chapter some of the things I already knew were things such as distance
education. Distance education can be defined as the delivery of instruction to students who are
separated from their teacher by time or location. I am familiar with this type of learning style
because it reminds me of online classes I have taken. Although I am not having a face-to-face
interaction with my teacher I am still learning the material. This type of teaching is an easier way
for teachers and students to learn on an independent level verses having a teacher standing
behind you while in a classroom. While reading I also learned about things I didnt know that
tied in with distance education. Such as the blended delivery systems which is a system that
provides both face-to-face interactions and online learning. This type of learning style blends
traditional work with an online experiences. But along with this type of learning is going to come
complications. These type of complications include that students and teachers must have
readiness in their work. Students must be ready to work with new technologies and accepting
new roles with responsibilities. For teachers distance learning requires more time planning, and
since it isnt an in classroom experience the teacher must make sure each student is logging
online and completing assignments which can make grading difficult. Teachers must always
have a plan B because technology isn't always reliable. An educator must have a critical plan for
how to proceed if systems fail. The way I would implement all this information into my
classroom would be to try and teach distance education. I would like to teach a more blended
style with some in the classroom and some online just because I enjoy the experience of teaching
in a classroom. Students would understand and learn how to submit assignments online through
blackboard and even do some video chats. This type of learning I feel is going to grow more and
more as technology starts to evolve.
Chapter 11 Reflection
Prior to reading this chapter I had already covered most of the information on the acceptable use
policy since we had already previously had an assignment on it. An acceptable use policy (AUP)
is a policy that has guidelines for what one can and cannot do for students interacting via web. I
already knew that teachers should make sure students understand this policy and the
consequences that come with not following the rules. Other things that I had already knew were
the issues with cyber bullying. Since the web has become such a huge part of everyones lives it
is easy for someone to be mean through a computer screen. Cyber bullying has become a huge
issue in schools throughout our states because it has become so easy to do. Some things I didnt
know while reading this chapter was the filtering software also known as NE tops Net filter. In
high school there would always be websites we were unable to access while we were using the
schools internet. Filtering software prevents students from accessing unacceptable internet sites.
While sometimes it can be successful and unsuccessful, it does improve the chances of
intervening when a child is online. Another way to keep children from indecent websites is

parental control options that are built into the computers systems. This allows you to block
websites, restrict downloads, set log in time limits, and limit access to games and other things.
What I am taking from this chapter into the classroom is things such as the AUP. I would make
sure my children would know that rules are put in place for a reason, regardless if you accept
them or not. I would also make sure they took into consideration that cyber bullying is a serious
offense and you should never make anyone feel bad about themselves. Finally, I would use the
parental control options in my own household as well as letting the parents of the children in my
classroom know about it also.
Chapter 12 Reflection
Prior to reading this chapter there were a few things I had already had some knowledge of.
Things like distance education classes and students having their own personal learning
environment. I have taken online classes all through college and I feel as though these classes
can be easy on you or hard, it all depends on how you handle them on your own. Online classes
are difficult for some people because they do not have the mindset to motivate their selves on
doing their online work. Professors that teach online classes are not going to be in your face
reminding you to complete every single assignment because they expect you to do that on your
own. Some things I didnt know prior to reading this chapter is some of the new technology that
is coming into play for the future. Technology such as the google glasses. This device is a pair of
glasses that carry a small camera in the corner of them. They can do things such as take pictures,
record videos, have FaceTime, and do all types of communication. Another new device is the 3D
printing that many people are learning about. This 3D printing makes it easier on a user to have a
three dimensional figure in front of them to assist with. With 3D printing doctors are beginning
to print out vital organs to help them address their patients problems. The most expensive 3D
printer right now is currently $5,000, but researchers are saying they are trying to make one as
affordable as $300. What I am taking from this chapter into the classroom is that technology is
on the rise to become bigger and better every year. Whether or not we want it to, we must adjust
to a more digital world than it used to be. Technology like google glass and 3D printing can be
used in classrooms to do important work. For google glass I would let my students be able to
video and snap pictures and still be able to use both of their hands to do other things since the
google glass is hands free. For 3D printing it would give my students a better way to recognize
and have a more hands on experience.
